The NRA Endorsement

My understanding is that the NRA has not endorsed Nancy Schafer. I talked to a friend with the NRA who confirmed this, but there are reports out there that the NRA did endorse.

What’s up?

BTW, here is the mail piece in question.

UPDATE: CONFIRMED. The National Rifle Association has not endorsed Nancy Schafer for the State Senate.

The only endorsements from the NRA Political Victory Fund are Jeff Chapman, Freddie Sims, Renee Unterman, and Bill Cowsert.

Unlike the Sonny quote where we can dance around the issue of whether or not there was an implied endorsement, in this case, it is absolutely clear that there was no endorsement by the NRA.

Pettys: NRA Says It Hasn’t Endorsed Nancy Schaefer, Despite Claim In Brochure

(8/1/08) Sen. Nancy Schaefer, who faces a runoff Tuesday with Habersham County Commission Chairman Jim Butterworth for the GOP nomination to her Senate seat, claims the NRA endorsement on a pamphlet she has distributed, but the NRA says it hasn’t endorsed her.

“The NRA has made no endorsements in the primary or the runoff in SD 50,” Randy Kozuch, director of the NRA’s director of state and local affairs, told us in an e-mail Friday afternoon. We had asked him directly after receiving e-mails questioning the endorsement from others.

It’s the second time something like this has happened in Schaefer’s race.
A week ago, Gov. Sonny Perdue took pains in a radio interview aired in Schaefer’s district to distance himself from suggestions in another brochure that he had endorsed the incumbent.

    NRA Denies Endorsing Nancy Schaefer
Schaefer Exposed for Another False Endorsement

In a campaign advertisement distributed across the 50th Senate District this week, Senator Nancy Schaefer claimed the endorsement of the National Rifle Association, the nation’s largest pro-2nd Amendment group.

In response to media inquiries, the NRA disavowed the endorsement and stated they had not made an endorsement of either candidate in the race.

The false endorsement was contained in a negative attack mailer sent out by Schaefer against Habersham County Commission Chairman Jim Butterworth, who finished first in the 3-way Republican primary on July 15th.

The runoff election will be held Tuesday.

A copy of the mailer is available to the media upon request. The media inquiry came from Dick Pettys, the respected veteran Capitol reporter, who reported on this false endorsement on InsiderAdvantage’s website.
