The World According To Sheriff Victor Hill

The Clayton Daily News has a story online with a general summary of Clayton County Sheriff Victor “Walking Small” Hill’s first term in office with interviews from his supports and detractors. But here’s the interesting part:

Sheriff Victor Hill sees himself as more than that. He is, he has said, someone who sees things in a bold, new way. In one anecdote he has repeated a number of times, he compares himself to Christopher Columbus. “There was this guy,” the sheriff said, “who said that the world was round. No one believed him. Everyone else thought the world was flat, and they wouldn’t listen to him, and they got in his way. But he set sail, anyway. He’s the guy who discovered America.”

Problem: Columbus didn’t discover the Earth was round. Aristotle was one of the first to note it more than 350 years before the birth of Christ by observing the Earth’s shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse. Later, Eratosthenes of Cyrene was the first to accurately estimate the Earth’s diameter and, of course, Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano solidified it with their efforts under sail (although the former died during the voyage, I believe).

LOL, I only knew the bit about Magellan and Elcano. The other stuff I had to google (grin)!

The whole point was that basic history is unknown to the good Sheriff. If George Bush had made this mistake, I’m sure certain people would find it hilarious! Oh, well.

  2. SecretIdentity-NotStevePerkins says:

Flawed hypo. George Bush would have credited Christopher Columbus with the theory of evolution.

i’m beginning to think that really is steve perkins afterall–i have one question mr. secret identity—do you moisturize?

Sadly to say, this is not a ‘laughing matter’… Many of us don’t see further than the end of our noses. Sheriff Hill wasn’t trying to give us a history lesson. Definitely he is not a historian, nor is he a politician. But not one can take away the fact the he is one of the best –perhaps the best- law enforcement supervisor in Clayton County and in the State of Georgia. Like Christopher Columbus he sailed to the ‘unknown world’ -being the unknown world: fighting crime and cleaning Clayton County- stepping over many peoples toes. He achieved most of the goals that he planned for the people of Clayton County. He cleaned the streets. He had straightened the County Jail. He created ‘special units’ to fight crime the way professional law enforcement should do it. His first ‘road block’ has been Commissioner Eldrin Bell. Just look the people Mr. Bell is surrounding him self with. Just ask Mr. Bell in whose house he got pistol wounded. By finding out the last fact you will figured out who the crook is. He was not always ‘politically correct’ but he got the job done. His goal wasn’t getting re-elected but cleaning Clayton County out of the nuisance that pretty soon will be back. I fell sorry for the law obeying citizens of Clayton County. Guys… still we don’t see further than the end of our noses.
