Perhaps there will be a reciprocal one for Senator Obama when it comes to practical experience.

ceej June 16, 2008 at 12:19 pm

I didn’t get my “Progressive List of People You Can Make Fun Of” mailing this year, but let me make sure I understand:

Sexism: Bad.
Racism: Bad.
Sexual Orientation…ism: Bad.
Ageism: Still ok.

Is that correct?

Demonbeck June 16, 2008 at 12:23 pm

Don’t forget Religion, ceej. You can’t make fun of someone’s religion – unless they are Christian.

Progressive Dem June 16, 2008 at 1:46 pm

If that is the worst treatment McCain gets he should be thankful. McCain even jokes about his age. Obama has already been likened to Curious George and faced false claims he is Muslim. At least this wasn’t done with a mean spirit. The Right is the master of the smear, and you can bet Obama will face worse.

Here is the John McCain version of “Cribs”. How hip can the man be?

“The Right is the master of the smear, and you can bet Obama will face worse.”

Progressive Dem,

Let us be honest: both parties and both end of the political spectrums engage in smears. To say that the right has mastered the smear is hard to objectively measure and is highly debatable. I tend to think that the left has mastered the smear with many of the ones that ceej has pointed out. It seems to me that if the left disagrees with you, then you are labeled one of the following: bigot, sexist, homophobe, racist, heartless, neanderthal, etc.

For example, Howard Dean, chariman of the DNC said, “Our moral values in contradistinction to the Republicans’ is we don’t think kids ought to go to bed hungry at night.” That is a smear and a blantant misrepresentation of Republicans.

I know we can get into a spitting contest arguing about which comments are more smear than someone else’s, but it seems to me that whichever side one disagrees with seems to be the side that has cornered the market on smear. Let us be intellectually honest: both sides are guilty of smearing and spinning to suit their political ends.

The left offers such big targets. On top of this, they really have become the party of race based politics. But problem is when conservatives avoid the race thing the left becomes even more sensitive than ever. At this point attacking some of the left wing candidates becomes as easy as falling off a log. As far as Obama goes, he could probably go further with a different name. Something like “Ted Middleton” or how about “Jimbo Scruggs”? Just a suggestion.

Ceej–this graphic is making fun of the fact that McCain has repeatedly commented that he can’t use a computer without help.

It has nothing to do with age. I would expect someone of McCain’s stature, regardless of age, to be able to use a computer and the internets.

Progressive Dem June 16, 2008 at 5:13 pm

SamT,
I’m not familiar with the Dean quote, but I’ll accept it as accurate. That really is kind of a throw away line however. Do you expect Obama to mount a sustained campaign and advertising based around that point?

The GOP however has fully embraced smears and incorporated them into their campaigns. Who can forget Nixon’s dirty tricks, or Poppy Bush using Willie Horton scare tactics, or Karl Rove using McCain’s adopted childs ethinicity, or the disparaging advertising against the patriotism of Bronze Star and Silver Star winners Max Cleland and John Kerry. Didn’t Karl Rove invent wedge issues? Or his outing a CIA agent in retaliation for her husbands challenge to evidence of WMD?

The GOP has a proud tradition of smearing and is reinforced with the likes of Michelle Maulkin, Sean Hannity and Rush. Newt should be in the Hall of Fame as the Babe Ruth of brick throwers. On “Face the Nation” to demonstrate that he hasn’t lost his arm he said the Supreme Court GITMO decison “would likely cost us an American city”.

Our kids don’t go to bed hungry because we work our fanny’s off to be sure WE FEED THEM- cuz if we waited on WIC vouchers, we would be dead!
The illegals have all the ” FREE food” that we pay for.

GOPeach
Like you I don’t exactly get “warm and fuzzies” when I see an illegal alien walking down the road with one in the oven, another on the back, one in the stroller, and a couple more 2o feet behind. And our so-called “conservatives” are stupified by the suggestion that everyone in this country should be subject by the same laws. And whatever their talking points suggest, they’re usually surrounded by so-called “experts” who get in the way of common sense.

GOPeach June 16, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I believe it stems from 1/3 of the Labor Force in the sewers… you know 50 million abortions = 5o million illegals who do not kill their own. … The Irony!

“It has nothing to do with age. I would expect someone of McCain’s stature, regardless of age, to be able to use a computer and the internets.”

………..and that’s just what is so damn “comedial” (which i don’t think is even a word), about it………..

…………and I’ll be glad to wait aimessly by, while prezident obamma fires up his computer, whips up on the internets, and locks into his e-mail “mode”………blasting his e-mails left and right………..open up a chatroom even.

Mr. McCain is a veteran to all this. And a Veteran, to boot.

He is older than bammy, so he knows all being said is taken down somewhere. Whether he thinks it, speaks it, or writes it, it probably will go into a record somewhere. Especially, since he’s a “candidate” and all.

So why shouldn’t a Presidential nominee act “Presidential”.

Why doesn’t he “make out” like he would do all that “stuff” himself, knowing that there are so many decisions when sitting at the “Pole Poasition” on the World, one doesn’t dawdle around picking out stationary very long at the time around the President’s office.

His age and rank in the Military give the understanding that he has been used to “delegating” tasks , and expecting them done, and on time.

Some folks are great orators. Some folks are great managers.

go figure.

I seriously doubt that there’s ANY way in which McShame hasn’t been compromised. Seriously. Use your imagination folks. 5 years in a Viet Nam Prison.

ConservativeCaucus June 17, 2008 at 10:24 am

Progressive… you do know who brought up Willie Horton don’t you?

SamTeasley June 17, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Progressive:

Of course Obama is not going to run on Dean’s quote. It is also true that McCain is not going to run on Obama’s middle name or the color of his skin – as well he shouldn’t.

However, I disagree that Dean’s comment is a throwaway line. It reveals what Dean (and he is likely not the only one on the left who shares that view) thinks about the “moral values” of people in the GOP. It is a smear. Dean’s point is that the GOP’s moral value is that kids go to bed hungry at night. Who says that?

The point is that people on the left AND right are guilty of smearing – to think that the right has cornered the market on it is a limited view.

GOPeach June 17, 2008 at 8:12 pm

We need a VIRAL VIDEO for McCain – like yesterday!!!!

Obama Girl has had 8,746,058 views!

McCain has to have something that will connect.
Does anyone have some REAL ideas????

gatormathis June 17, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Obama Girl is a phenomenon.

Peach.

You ain’t.

Game Fan June 19, 2008 at 1:01 am

Here’s an idea. If you took some weather balloons and rope, and a bicycle, a propeller you would have a pedal powered floating transport.
