Do We Really Know Who McCain Is?

For nearly 30 years, Carol (John McCain’s first wife) has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

The full story, and I do mean full, is here.

  1. A Typical White Person says:

For one who probably went through the Clinton Administration yacking about “It was just sex!” about Bill Clinton’s act of perjury, you certainly appear to all of a sudden be Miss Goody Two Shoes in the realm of personal lives.

  2. Rick Day says:

ATYP: Put a sock in it.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

And you went through the last 13 months of the Clinton administration (assuming you are not 12) doing the same thing you accuse Spacey.

you are a shame to our race.

  3. Jace Walden says:

This is one of those things I agree with Spacey one. Republicans want to be the morality police of the world. It’s perfectly okay to call them out on their hypocricies.

  4. Rick Day says:

Jace, don’t you just LOVE their revolving Family Values ™ ?

One of many reasons I detest Republicans, they can dish it out, but…

  5. Tea Party says:

One word for the esteemed bloggers, legislators, and everyone else reading here:

    G R I D L O C K

We are ‘they’, folks, and ‘they’ are keeping us from doing the Nation’s business. If we engage in the time honored practice of Partisanship, we are NOT going to BE ABLE TO pay the price.

    WAKE UP!

  6. drjay says:

i think his personal life is perfectly fair game –and if asked about it he should be forth right and honest — although i doubt he would be — and i doubt it will change many votes one way or the other…it is worth noting that the divorce rate for POW is like double that of the rest of us — but i would be curious to here his answers as to what transpired…

  7. CHelf says:

I guess this would be part of the “new” strategy of changing the tone in DC. This will be lovely to see. I wonder if all of the left wing 527’s and bloggers who are so giddy over Obama and his new message will actually heed the messenger or will they stay in the mud and drag this out. Keep in mind DC has two way streets. I hope Obama and his VP will have as squeaky clean reputations as well. Good to see the ‘message’ Barry preached lasted oh about 5 minutes.

  8. A Typical White Person says:

The Republicans haven’t touted the “Family Values” message in several years, so YOU drop it!

    Getting to Know John McCain

“Another McCain story, somewhat better known, is about the Vietnamese practice of torturing him by tying his head between his ankles with his arms behind him, and then leaving him for hours. The torture so badly busted up his shoulders that to this day Mr. McCain can’t raise his arms over his head.”

“Mr. Day recalls with pride Mr. McCain stubbornly refusing to accept special treatment or curry favor to be released early, even when gravely ill. Mr. McCain knew the Vietnamese wanted the propaganda victory of the son and grandson of Navy admirals accepting special treatment. ‘He wasn’t corruptible then,’ Mr. Day says, ‘and he’s not corruptible today.'”

I guess we’ll have to choose which view we respect most and what matters most to each of us.

  10. SouthFultonGuy says:

Boy its a good thing for Obama that his history and circle of friends are squeeky clean….

  11. dudelove says:

Well the article was written in a very liberal UK newspaper, so the thread is once again not very GA oriented.

It’s funny, all these folks who don’t like Republicans / McCain want to be crusaders for the ex-wife. All these stranges, who don’t really know McCain or his ex-wife see to have their stones to throw. The irony is when the ex-wife speaks about McCain, she’s got nothing but nice things to say about him.

I suppose those that have never been divorced may cast the first stone.

  12. SpaceyG says:

There was no PP during the Clinton Admin. So how do you know anything about how I thought/felt/acted then? (I’ll give you a hint though: I was not quite as reactionary.)

Besides, I was too busy living the American capitalist dream during the entire Clinton Admin to waste valuable time blogging. We all were. My how times have changed.

  13. dudelove says:

Not sure if I remember the American capitalistic dream, more like a big mortgage fraud. I remember the dot com boom, talk about the decade of greed. It was basically a big scam. Remember the fairly drastic measures taken to pull the economy out of Clinton’s tailspin.

  14. GOP Girl says:

Wow. I can’t wait to see the spin on this….you know, since all candidate’s “personal” lives are fair game and the voters “have a right to know who their voting for.”

  15. Decaturguy says:

Democrats “sticking to the issues” again…

Yeah, the Republicans would never try to make an issue out of what some crazy preacher might have said.

Really, though, how much do we know about John McCain?

  16. Doug Deal says:

How much do you practice being that intellectually dishonest? McCain has gone on the record on a number of things, yet somehow BObama meets your threshold?

This is the reason the primary reason i vote is to vote against your party. The absolute bankruptcy of ideas in the Democratic Party from top to bottom is much too poison of a pill to swallow.

  17. jsm says:

“Yeah, the Republicans would never try to make an issue out of what some crazy preacher might have said.”

They wouldn’t had he not been your nominee’s pastor, close friend, confidant, and mentor for 20 years.

And BTW, it’s not what he “might have said.” It’s what he said. Words matter–just ask Tom DeLay, George Allen, Trent Lott, etc.

  18. A Typical White Person says:

We know a lot more about the history and character of McCain than anyone knows about Barack Obama, that’s for darned sure.

You can dissect and determine that McCain should have done this, or not done that, but, at least he has a track record of true public service to this country.

Obama’s history is quite lacking in anything but emptiness and undefined form.

  19. Progressive Dem says:

We will see if some Democratic 527 group uses this divorce against McCain. I doubt they will. Would the GOP make an issue over an Obama divorce? Would sleazy FOX News, Bill O’Reily and Sean Hannity be all over it? Damn right they would because the GOP and the rigt-wing noise machine are the Masters of Mud.
