As the AJC reports today, “The Clayton County school board wants to further limit when citizens can address the board and what they can say. On Tuesday, the board unveiled a proposal that calls for a separate monthly meeting solely for the public to address the board. This would mean that residents no longer [...]

Macon Councilman Erickson Open To Privatization Of Trash Services; Slices & Dices Budget
May 27th, 2008 · 8 Comments
If Macon does not privatize its garbage collection during the next budget cycle, the city will have to turn to “massive layoffs” or tax hikes to make up for the amount of revenue that will be lost, Mayor Robert Reichert said Tuesday.
Reichert made the comments after he and officials from the company WastePro held a [...]

The Fulton County Plan To Keep Business: Higher Taxes
May 27th, 2008 · 4 Comments
Stupid.
Tenants at some of Atlanta’s biggest buildings are facing sharply higher costs because of Fulton County’s revaluation of commercial properties. The projected median increase is 44 percent. At several towers, however, the run-up is even higher.

Well I didn’t see Erick on Hannity & Colmes live last night because there was a Jon & Kate Plus 8 marathon yesterday. Living as I do with four women, there as no way what I wanted to do would prevail so I set up my DVR to record H&C during the over night hours [...]

Essential Air Service
May 27th, 2008 · 6 Comments
The Telegraph has an article on essential air service in Macon. We’ll be meeting today at 4pm to discuss the options.
I am actually appalled that the federal government would fund something called “essential air service.” If a community cannot, in the free market, fund its own air service with demand from its citizens, [...]

AJC v. The Speaker
May 27th, 2008 · 16 Comments
They have an editorial up here on the Speaker still demanding his divorce records be closed off from the world.
Now, several friends noted at the time of the divorce that it was perfectly reasonable for the judge to seal the documents until the 31 day waiting period for the divorce ran out.
We are well past [...]

Scarecrows in Hoschton
May 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments
First, I’ve never heard of Hoschton, GA. Second,
they want to break a record for most scarecrows on display in a single city.
Clearly the organizers aren’t that bright. The easiest, most affordable way to win that record is to invite the General Assembly to show up. They’re already stuffed to the gills with [...]

Another Voter ID Lawsuit
May 27th, 2008 · 1 Comment
From the tip line comes word that the Democratic Party has filed suit against Governor Perdue and Karen Handel over the voter id matter. I guess they’ve digested the Supreme Court’s decision saying it is legal to have a voter ID requirement and they’ve found what they think is a way around the decision.

Officials discuss Tubman’s prospects
May 27th, 2008 · Comments Off
The saga continues.
The Tubman African American Museum is becoming a “destination point,” museum officials said, even as it faces significant challenges to fulfill the nearly $9.5 million fundraising goal to open its long-delayed location on Cherry Street.
Maybe in my children’s children’s lifetime the museum will be finished.
It’s like Macon’s version of the big dig.

For one of my blogs, I spoke yesterday with Gwinnett native Alex Robson. Alex is one of the people behind defineFREEDOM.com, a very interesting website that collects people’s definition of freedom. I thought Peach Pundit readers might like to hear the interview.
