Republican Accused of Adultery, Domestic Violence, & Mental Cruelty

One of the three Republicans vying for their Party’s nod to take on the Democrat in Georgia’s 12th Congressional district this November is facing accusations of domestic violence from his soon-to-be ex-wife.

Former Savannah talk radio host Ben Crystal, whose full name is Anthony Bennett Garrison Crystal, is currently going through divorce proceedings in which his estranged wife alleges that he “violently ejected” her out of their shared home while she was recovering from surgery.

Court documents filed in Chatham County Superior Court, May 6th, also claim that Crystal committed adultery and requests a divorce be granted on the grounds of “mental cruelty.”

Sources say that several Georgia GOP officials were mailed the divorce documents along with other information on Crystal at the state Republican convention this past weekend. It is also rumored that some high-level Georgia Republican Party officials may get involved in the 12th district GOP primary to prevent Ben Crystal from tarnishing the Party’s image with his candidacy.

So wait, running under the slogan “Professional A-hole for Congress” isn’t already tarnishing to the Party’s image?

  2. GOP Girl says:

I guess when Andre didn’t get enough attention to this post on his own site a week ago, he resulted in tyring it here. No doubt, fueled by someone else’s campaign.

  3. Ali A. Akbar says:

@GOPGirl I think it’s highly inappropriate that you are 1) commenting on a BLOG post as a senior campaign official for Ben Crystal’s campaign and 2) Accusing other GOP candidates of fueling a Democrat Blogger’s posting.

    Lack of integrity.

  4. GOP Girl says:

And Ali are you saying that you are NOT a campaign official for a campaign and who said I accused another “GOP” candidate???? Hummmm….guilty dog barks first????

  5. Chris says:

Well, Mr. Crystal isn’t the Speaker of the House, so it should be pretty easy for someone in the Savannah area to produce these documents.

Till then we have is a peeing match between two also-ran candidates’s proxies.

  6. GOP Girl says:

    Ha.

But “documents” prove nothing, unless there is a police report or hospital discharge attached. She said (disgruntled) he said (over it) and vice versa.

  7. ACConservative says:

I think his whole general attitude, delighting in being a “professional a-hole” is far more indicative of the complete tool he is than some reports of spousal abuse.

Those reports just add to the legend of tomtoolery that apparently is Ben Crystal.

  8. Damien says:

Ben Crystal is not the kind of politician we need.We must have someone for the people!

He is tarnishing the GOP image.

  9. voice of reason says:

GOP girl… you don’t have to be a member of someone else’s campaign to believe a candidate is bad, both for the party and for the district. I am not a member of any campaign, and I believe Crystal has too much baggage to be a viable candidate. He would quite easily be dragged through the mud in the general election, especially following on the heals of Craig, Ryan, Foley… need I go on. Any republican candidate needs to be squeaky clean right now to stand any chance. The accusations may very well be wrong, but unfortunately perception becomes reality with most of the general population.

Anyone with as much political experience as you seem to have should be wise enough to realize that.

  10. Icarus says:

    Damien, Damien, Damien,

We don’t need someone “for the people”,

We need someone “for the children”.

    Get it together, dude.

In a time when the Republican Party needs leaders to climb out of the hole, it does not appear that one is going to appear out of this race.

  12. Holly says:

I am a friend of John Stone and have known him since 1996. I don’t think that disqualifies my opinion on this subject.

I’ve been involved with campaigns at the local, state, and federal level at this point, and if any candidate has anything of this sort come out against him or her, you can be absolutely certain that it’s going to be an issue. Why? It goes to the person’s character, and as I’ve said at least 100 times on this blog, a candidate’s character should and does matter. Any opponent worth his (or her) salt is going to point this kind of thing as the very reason why the other guy won’t be a good representative – he doesn’t have good Georgia values.

If I were working for Ben Crystal’s campaign (which I am not), I would issue a statement immediately, but I’d be careful about what I said. You don’t want to come off looking guilty, but you don’t want to deny it, because then you still look guilty. I’d ask the voters for their understanding as my wife and I go through a difficult process. But that’s just me.

Andre: Can you get us a docket number on that case? Here’s the link below to help out:

    http://www.chathamcounty.org/jims/dockets/civ/search.asp?t=j

Thanks much! (BTW, this *may* be a re-post. It seems that some of my posts are getting clogged up in PP filters. If so, sorry!)

I can’t believe Ben and his loyal supporters actually thought that this stuff woudln’t get out sooner or late. Add the allegations made by his estranged second wife to the fact that he was fired after his station settled a slander lawsuit, and boy, does he have baggage.

I realize people in Savannah may think his divorce and the allegations surrounding them are no big deal, but I’m pretty sure the rest of the distric, especially the more rural parts, wouldn’t agree.

There’s a very good reason John Barrow waited until after the 2006 election to get a divorce.

  15. ACConservative says:

At least John Barrah’s divorce didn’t involve allegations of “mental cruelty”. Although I can’t think of anything more mentally cruel than having to live with or near John Barrah (I still haven’t recovered).

What else would you expect from the Grand Old Party of Rampant Hypocrisy?

  17. TheFacts says:

I as many people on this board have been divorced and believe that it should be said that timing for a divorce cannot always be “picked”.

That said divorces are never a good thing and in many cases falsehoods are fabricated in order to hurt a spouses standing in their community. The docket number is appreciated but it should also be remembered that these are only allegations and not facts. I am currently in the process of obtaining those facts and will try to keep you all posted on the progress.

Ben Crystal is a candidate unlike the others in the 12th in that he has been a vocal public figure for the GOP for the majority of his career. This has left him open to criticism as well as praise for his stance on many issues pertaining to politics over the years. The GOP owes Ben thanks for being on the front lines and defending this Party in the good times and the bad.

Ben’s policies are sound and echo the values that many of us were brought up on, less government and more freedom. He is a Republican whose vision is to keep America and Georgia
that shining city on the hill President Reagan spoke of.

    Thank you for your time.

  18. 110dbmichael says:

    Bleh!!!!

The part: “Republican Party officials may get involved in the 12th district GOP primary to prevent Ben Crystal from tarnishing the Party’s image with his candidacy.”

I find that particularly humorous from this writer. There has been scandal 20x greater than this in the republican party, not to mention, and what should be our main concern, all of the very much un-republican bills proposed and passed by elected republicans that have “tarnished” our name.

Come on people its time to be honest here, Republicans are supposed to be independent minded, honest people which are typically OBJECTIVE people. This is why the party is tarnished. Its not what the other side thinks of us, it is what we have come to think of our peers, each other. Perception IS NOT reality! That is a Subjective POV common with Subjective/ Collectivists Aka Socialist Democrats.

I come back to honesty here with regard to the article…

WE ALL have had issues with our significant other(s), whether it be a current husband/wife, past husband/wife, girlfriend/boyfriend, etc, and at some point there was a breakup/split/divorce and we, the 2 (TWO) people who it concerned, were at our highest levels of anger & frustration and acted on emotion. Does this mean we should not continue our professions, or still be Pet owners, or parents, or continue to host the knitting group, or keep our membership to the American Legion, or even go to the post office? That is absurd!!!

The Problem for the Republican party isn’t that we have candidates that are human, its that we have people within who treat them as if they arent!

  19. Hortence says:

Fact: Ben Crystal filed for divorce just days before announcing for Congress

Fact: In his wife’s counterclaim to the divorce proceedings she has alleged spousal abuse, adultery, and mental cruelty

Fact: Republicans from throughout the 12th District report receiving copies of the divorce papers as well as unemployment records in the mail

Fact: Ben Crystal was fired from his job as a radio host after being sued. He claimed that the rhetoric on his show was just “show business”

Fact: Ben Crystal’s campaign signs are all in DIRECT VIOLATION of FEC regulations

Fact: Two staffer’s resigned from Ben Crystal’s campaign after learning about the allegations and watching the candidate’s own inappropriate behavior at the State Convention

Fortunately there are two other qualified candidates in this race so it shouldn’t hurt our party too much. Hopefully, Mr. Crystal will demonstrate some level of class and withdraw before he causes any further embarrasment.

We’ve all had family problems and to a certain degree, those things should be off limits in the political arena, however, when it comes to spousal abuse and adultery, those are two serious charges.

  20. voice of reason says:

“Does this mean we should not continue our professions, or still be Pet owners, or parents, or continue to host the knitting group, or keep our membership to the American Legion, or even go to the post office? That is absurd!!! ”

Wow! Comparing an elected office, where people are putting their trust in someone’s character to make decisions for them in Washington to “hosting a knitting group”…. I’m impressed!

By all means, get divorced and continue to host your knitting groups… but I’d prefer my representative in Washington concentrate on his job there, and not be distracted by current, ongoing divorce proceedings.

  21. PoliticsBlows says:

You people make me so sick. If you want real facts here they are:

FACT: Ben’s wife left him after he wasn’t famous anymore, and now is trying to pursue her own glory by destroying him.

FACT: All of the negative mailers, myspace pages, etc.. are coming from the candidate’s ex-wife who is working directly with another campaign.

FACT: Ben’s campaign has complied with every single FEC regulation.

FACT: One staffer resigned from the Crystal campaign, after she stood up and lent her support to Ray McKinney’s campaign chair Clint Murphy. Mr. Murphy, who at the same covention, accused another Crystal staffer of rape. Ben did not behave inappropriately at any moment during the convention.

While I will acknowledge that John Stone is a very qualified candidate, a man who tried to run for Vice-President of the United States until someone reminded him that he couldn’t do that, should not be taken seriously.

Futhermore, I pray that should any of you hate spewers out there ever go through a divorce don’t have to put up with the libel and slander in the media that Mr. Crystal has been forced to put up with.

This is why people hate Republicans. They eat their own, and won’t let the truth get in the way of destroying a man’s life.

  22. shep1975 says:

PoliticalBlows. As Chair of that Convention, I will state the record that Clint Murphy at no time accused ANY Crystal staffer of rape or otherwise. The staffer who resigned from the Crystal campaign never got the chance to vote for Clint because Clint dropped out.

  23. Madelinebarks says:

Ok PoliticsBlows – here are the facts “muffin”

FACT: Ben’s wife did NOT leave him… Period!!! Again, shall I remind everyone that he left her, how by kicking her out of the house in the rain with a broken foot with just the clothes on her back and a garbage bag of her belongings.
He was fired over a year ago, so when did the celebrity become anonymous?

FACT: She is not working for another campaign nor am I… I just want everyone to know some FACTS about our candidates!

Oh poor Ben Crystal “yawn”… having to put up with this slander… shoot if you all only knew have the stuff that he said about the people that are probably standing by his side now…

  24. Bull Moose says:

The FEC requires that all campaign signs have a PAID FOR BY disclosure on them.

There may be others, but I know of two campaigns in Georgia that are currently not following the rules, Vernon Jones for Senate and Ben Crystal for Congress.

NOT AT US! WE HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER SO LETS (GET REV. WRIGHT LIKE) ON CRYSTAL??? WRONG … WRONG… WRONG… AND YOU WILL SEE HOW THE VOTERS REJECT YOU ON ELECTION DAY!!!

  26. Bill Simon says:

As long as the race is a federal race. Stte races do not require that.

What imagery do you get when you think of a knitting group???… now think about most public offices! and in the case here the main part of the analogy is the senseless gossip.

    Now back on topic!

How about some facts on Crystal’s platform and on McKinney’s? I have spent a good amount of time with both; and for similar and separate reasons I would vote for either one.

Ben was naive to think this issue woudn’t come up.

And so what if Ray ran for Vice President. I think it takes a lot of guts for someone to want to make a point that many of us in the grassroots are fed up with politics as usual.

I’m a long-time Republican activist, and I was skeptical at first. But after meeting him and hearing his ideas and message,

The Republican Party and our nation is at a crossroads, and Ray is the type of Congressman we need to work for real change in Washington, D.C.

Wow! you guys really crack me up!

Ok, so I am new here today, but I am certainly not new to logic, communication and perspective.

This FEC sign violation hogwash is worse than “my dad’s bigger than yours” school yard spats that 7 year olds come up with.

I would run a campaign and not put the “paid for” bit on there in protest to the fact I would have to put it on there! Being a believer in limited government, I especially find government enforced agencies/commissions making up rules to justify their existence especially on the matter of something so inconsequential and ignored by anyone but that agency/commission (or of course by people who like to stir up BS because it gives ’em that “special feeling”) especially offensive.

again its no wonder people are so paranoid in the republican party… Ask Clint Murphy about his purpose on the State Convention Floor with the ear piece and radio.

    Cut the crap people!

I ask: When did we put fairness and gentlemanly conduct aside, lose our sense of intellect on matters and become obsessed with “witch hunting”?

  32. ACConservative says:

None of this should even matter because Ben Crystal is a dud of a candidate. When your campaign slogan is “a-hole for congress” you’ve already shown me that you have the maturity of a newborn chimpanzee and aren’t fit to represent any logical adult in Washington. I know that I’ve been bemoaning the caliber of candidates for the GOP in this 12th district race, but its only getting worse.

After talking with Mr. McKinney a bit at the convention, I’m 100% convinced that all three of these guys will get served up on a silver platter by John Barrah. Keep in mind this is a district where Max Burns, MAX FREAKIN’ BURNS, could at least take it to the wire.

The Congressional elections are going to be down nationwide for the GOP, but if we could have found someone with a shred of electability in the 12th, Georgia could have had two reeeeal close races and a possibility of two democratic seats changing hands.

  33. ACConservative says:

And why we’re talking about those with the maturity and reasoning capabilities of a newborn chimpanzee, has Paul Broun’s anti-porn bill gone anywhere?

  34. Holly says:

This is the most entertaining thread I’ve ever read on PeachPundit. Congrats, Andre! It has all the makings of Georgia politics at it’s funniest.

However, I am going to respectfully disagree with the person who said that Ben Crystal was the only one who was politically active. Hello? John Stone worked in Congress, serving as both Charlie Norwood and Max Burns’ communications director. That’s very politically active.

  35. Bill Simon says:

    Holly,

Were those positions Stone held at the “government” level of communications OR the “political campaign” level?

There is a distinct difference. You cannot lie your ass off at the government level of communications director.

  36. REPUBLICANFIRST says:

WELL…WELL…WELL… IT SOUNDS LIKE THE COMPETITION FOR THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY ARE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT BEN CRYSTAL? I MEAN HE IS THE FRONT RUNNER!!! AND NOW THE COMPETITION IS GOING “HILLARY” (CRY ME A RIVER) ON HIM! THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE 2 OTHER CANDIDATES AND THIER CHAIRMEN. HAVE LOST 3 CONGRESSIONAL RACES TO DATE! BEN CRYSTAL IS ON RECORD FOR 6 YEARS AS A STAUNCH CONSERVTIVE! AS THE HOST OF THE FORMER #1 RATED CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO SHOW, IN THE REGION “THE BEN BENNETT SHOW” HIS ABRASIVE STYLE IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED TO GO AFTER BARROW IN THE FALL!

1* ALL DIVORCE LAWYERS ARE SHARKS! THEY WILL ATTACK WITH NO MERIT, A PERSONS CHARACTER, BECAUSE THEY CAN! AND THEY WANT A BIG PAY DAY! JUST ASK 50% OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION IF THAT IS SO? SO YOU WILL FIND THAT THIS WILL NOT BE A FACTOR! OH AND BY THE WAY? BEN WILL TAKE THE PEPSI CHALLENGE WITH BARROWS DIVORCE WOES ! “COME NOVEMBER!”

2* YES BEN WAS FIRED FROM HIS RADIO SHOW BECAUSE OF A FRIVILOUS LAW SUIT ORCHESTRATED BY A LIBERAL CONSPIRACY! THAT WAS LATER DROPPED BY THE PETITIONER! BECAUSE HE COULD NOT WIN IN COURT! OH AND BY THE WAY “SEAN HANNITY” WAS FIRED EARLY IN HIS CAREER UNDER SIMILAIR CIRCUMSTANCES!

3* RAY MC KINNEYS CAMPAIGN MANAGER CLINT MURPHY TRIED TO “SHAKE DOWN” THE CRYSTAL CAMPAIGN FOR 4 THOUSAND DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A JOB! WHEN THEY TOLD HIM HE WAS DILUSIONAL AND THAT HE WASNT WORTH 1/100 THAT AMOUNT? ( BECAUSE OF THE HUMMILIATING AND INCOMPETENT CAMPAIGN ADVICE HE GAVE TO BARBARA DOOLEY!) HE THEN OUT OF “SPITE” CRIED AND BEGGED RAY MCKINNEY FOR A JOB AND THAT HE WOULD WORK FOR FREE! SO LAUREL AND HARDY HAVE BEEN BASHING OTHER CANDIDATES EVER SINCE! BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO KNOWN ISSUES TO DISCUSS! —I GUESS YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR? OR WHAT YOU DONT PAY FOR?

4* CLINT AND RAY HAVE NOT RAISED DOLLAR 1 SINCE THIER MARRIAGE! AND ITS NO WONDER THEY HAVE ALL DAY TO READ AND CRITIQUE THE BEN CRYSTAL FOR CONGRESS ROAD AND YARD SIGNS. THEY CANT AFFORD ANY OF THIER OWN??? NOT 1 SIGN??? (NOT EVEN WRITTEN IN CRAYON?) I MEAN SPRAY PAINTING A VOLKSWAGON BEETLE! RED, WHITE AND BLUE AND DRIVING AROUND TOWN ALL DAY LONG YOOODELING AND SCREAMING OUT THE WINDOW “I WANT TO BE PRESIDENT” —I MEAN A CONGRESSMAN! IS NOT THE GREATEST STATEGY FOR THE 12TH AT ALL! (BUT THATS CLINT FOR YOU)

CLINT ALSO VERBALLY ACCOSTED ONE OF BENS CAMPAIGN WORKERS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ALL OF US. LAST WEEKEND AT THE CONVENTION, BECAUSE HE WAS LAUGHED AT WHEN NO ONE NOMINATED HIM FOR ANY POSITIONS!

5* FACT—RAY MCKINNEY HAS RUN FOR PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT AND NOW FOR CONGRESS. ALL IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS! THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOU CANT RUN FOR VICE PRESIDENT??? YOU HAVE TO BE ON A PARTY TICKET! THIS IS NOT A BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB WHERE YOU RUN FOR “VICE PRESIDENT” AND GET TO BE PEN PALS WITH BRAD PITT OR A STARVING BOLIVIAN MIGRANT WORKER! “OH MY GOD” DA-DA- UH – DOY- DA— [email protected]#$%^&*+??? WHICH WAY DID HE GO?— WHICH WAY DID HE GO???

ITS NO WONDER 90% OF THIS ENTIRE BLOG HAS BEEN ORCHESTRATED BY CLINT MURPHY AND RAY MCKINNEY! WHEN YOU ARE THAT TRAUMATIZED BY THE THOUGHT OF THE BEATING THAT YOU WILL TAKE IN JULYS PRIMARY? YOU DO WHAT OBAMA AND HILLARY WOULD DO? YOU MAKE FOOLS OUT OF YOUR SELVES!

  39. FreedomOfPeach says:

    110db,
the sign disclosure may be hogwash, but it is the law, Title 11 Chapter 1. This is punishable by a fine. Also, the video on his website is also in violation of the law. A recent fundraiser also stated that campaign contributions were tax deductable, another violation. This begs the question, Who is running this campaign and will they be the ones running the office in Washington? If they can’t follow basic election laws how are they going to function in DC?

You even have the campaign manager stating a “fact” that they are not in violation of FEC law when clearly they are. Denial does not work well in court.

    The Facts,

You weren’t at the Rome YR Board meeting where the first allegation came up. You weren’t party to the phone calls from the officers of the club which the member accused was from discussing with me whether he should be expelled from the YRs for the alleged drug use.

On the latter, I suggested that they talk with him and make sure that if it ever happened again he was gone from the organization. I also told them his term at the state would be up soon so future behavior would not potentially cause a state YR scandal. One incident in a year is a mistake and can easily be forgiven…especially when there are other circumstances involved which I will not get into to protect the other people who were involved in the Rome incident.

Neither allegation was erroneous because both were allegations that I personally had to deal as Chairman of the organization. I also believed it was important that in the privacy of the convention body, this information had to be aired. When do you want to find out there is an issue with an elected leader that could potentially damage the entire organization? Before the election of after? The convention made the decision to elect. If anything happens at this point, my hands are clean. If nothing happens, maybe the heightened scrutiny will have been a factor.

However, all that being said, TheFacts is not living up to his/her name. Furthermore, TheFacts have now taken what happened behind closed doors out in the open. Thank you.

By the way, I am the other resignation from the Ben Crystal campaign. The campaign asked me to be a paid advisor, which I declined due to my time schedule in that I did not feel I could devote the necessary time to warrant payment. I did offer any advice and counsel I could give them free of charge and have had numerous talks and email with Campaign Manager Robin Wheeler on everything from the website layout to Ben’s pushcard.

In addition, I had 2 hour conversation with Ben on what he needs to be doing at this stage of his campaign, how to maximize his fundraising, and get general get out the vote ideas that have really worked for me in the past.

When I told Robin I was done with the campaign, her response was, “you really weren’t advising us anyway.”

    Shep,

I really don’t think you want to go down this road of “When do you want to find out there is an issue with an elected leader that could potentially damage the entire organization?” Your own criminal charges could easily overshadow all allegations that you have made.

And this was taken from behind closed doors as soon as you felt that it needed “to be aired”. Such gross emotionally fueled attacks will not lay dormant in such an organization.

Your continuance down this road shows your total lack of experience and will definately not be forgotten by people that at one time respected you and could have potentially helped further your political aspirations.

    2. Last time I saw it, it’s a PT Cruiser, not a VW. Just like most of your rants you can’t get the facts right. At least you got the colors correct.

    3. Your to obtuse to realize that McKinney was trying to shake up politics, get people involved, and he actually did accomplish just that. He even stated the same mission to several GOP activists before he started his campaign.

    4. Do you think a guy that works in Nuclear power and reached a high position doesn’t have a clue on how to get things done? Some people take the challenge of “You can’t” and turn it into “You can”.

    5. Sean Hannity never told a “liberal” reporter that his conservative rhetoric was just show biz, unlike Crystal apologizing to Peterson. See printed story in Sav Paper.

    6. Your rants are a clear indication of how unhinged the whole Crystal campaign is. Too bad you and your friends decided to try and turn the 12th congressional race into a circus.

Then again, I guess that is what clowns do. I wonder if the fact your political advisor, DD, was a major contributor to the Barrow campaign has anything to do with it?

I do have to congratulate you on steering the whole thread away from the fact your boy is in the middle of a divorce and openly admitting he is already in a relationship within days of filing for his divorce. That will go over well with the party base.

He slandered a prominent minority in Savannah. There goes the minority vote.

He filed for his second divorce and is already in a relationship. There goes most republican women and anyone with religous morals.

He publicly admits his “conservative” show was just show biz. There goes die hard conservatives.

When he gets done paying all of his FEC violation fines, there goes his campaign money.

He may be the frontrunner at the pubcrawl but politically he is DOA!
