Special Elections…..

May 13th, 2008 by Chris Farris · 4 Comments

So a special election was called for HD93 due to Ron Sailor’s resignation. Will there have to be special elections in Barry Fleming’s district and the districts of other state reps and state senators who have decided to qualify for different offices? I know at least two other legislators qualified to run against Rep. Barrow and Lewis in the Democrat Primary.

Doesn’t that seem like a silly waste of money (unless the Governor calls a special session I guess)?

No, the terms don’t overlap, so there is no “resign to run” requirement. Barry’s still a member of the house in the event of a special session.

Almost as silly as intentionally misspelling the name of a political party for cheap points.

Rugby, don’t be mad at Chris’ typo. At least he left in the “c” this time.

According to Secretary of State’s office, a special election was required in Sailor’s district because he resigned before the end of the General Assembly session. Had he waited until after adjournment to resign, no special election would have been required. As Icarus correctly noted, other races are not affected because there is no overlap between legislative terms of office and the congressional term that Barry Fleming qualified to run for.
