The Clayton County School Board Is Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!

I have a question that needs answering…

…Do the remaining members of the Clayton County School Board have any brains at all?

This past weekend, the school board voted to hire John Thompson as a “corrective superintendent” with benefits that include…I’ll wait for you to finish swallowing your coffee…

…Benefits that include:

…a school-system-provided fax machine for his home, internet access, a laptop and “other electronic devices for effective modern communication.” His contract requires the board to pay for all maintenance and recurring charges for those devices.

So in addition to an annual salary of $285,000, John Thompson got the Clayton County School Board to buy him a laptop, buy a fax machine for his home, pay for his internet access, and pick up the tab for any “other electronic devices for effective modern communication.”

I bet Thompson was trying to contain his glee as he walked out of that school board meeting with all those perks. Either that or he was wondering if he could’ve convinced the board members to maybe pick up his mortgage payments, pay his light & gas bill, or even send him and his family on a cruise to the Bahamas.

Is it just me or does it seem like the Clayton County School Board just got fleeced?

Parents of Clayton County students in the 11th grade should just 100% plan on not having accreditation next year…

  2. StevePerkins says:

No offense, Andre, but what do you do for a living? I make only a fraction of this guy’s salary, yet my employer provides me with a company laptop and lets me expense my DSL. I don’t have a home FAX machine… but you can buy them for $50-100, so I’m sure I could get my company to expense the tab if I really needed one for anything.

This is pretty standard stuff for a white-collar job, especially in management. Now, I’m not trying to defend Clayton County of all things, but I don’t get the “shock” and “outrage” I’m supposed to feel about somebody’s company picking up their DSL tab.

  3. Demonbeck says:

Steve do you work a governmental job for an organization that is currently failing 100% of its constituency?

  4. StevePerkins says:

Well actually, I graduated college 3 or 4 months before the dot-com bubble burst… and most of the companies I’ve worked for HAVE been failing.

Yeah, yeah, yeah… I get it, and said above that I’m not trying to defend Clayton County in general. However, I get tired of this class warfare crap. Everybody’s jealous that someone else might be getting a better perk than them… whether it’s national stories about CEO getting 9-figure compensation packages, or just rumors around the water cooler about that brownose chick in H.R. getting a nicer chair for her desk.

It’s petty and stupid. Expensing your internet service is a pretty standard thing for most white-collar jobs. No need to “wait until I’ve swallowed my coffee” before hitting me with this shockingly surprising shock.

Did the dude get his 24 hour security detail and driver? That seems to be a little better than FastAccess Lite.

  6. Jason Pye says:

The reason that this is appalling, and for some reason Andre left this out, is that the President of SACS and the Governor’s two appointees to Clayton say the new Superintendent is not qualified to have the job.
