Don’t throw your butt in the road

DNR will come after you and fine you $200.00. They are getting aggressive with people throwing cigarette butts on the road. But seriously, given the number of smokers out there, how many do you think will actually get slammed with a fine?

  1. Doug Deal says:

When something is difficult to enforce, they need to make the penalties more severe to serve as an example to people who think it doesn’t matter. It would be better to make it minimum 10 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, which can be suspended if the violator agrees to spend 40 hours cleaning the highways of garbage.

Almost every other stop getting off the the interstate, one of the people in front of me tosses a butt out the window. Just send an undercover patrol unit through there and you could easily have a small army in a few weeks of enforcement.

With all we hear about litter, it really gets under my skin when I see people throw cigarette butts out the window. During my commute, I usually have 1 or 2 of these bounce off my windshield daily during the warm months.

Doug is right. At most interstate exit intersections, the edges of the road are littered with discarded butts. This looks awful, and you’d think people would care more about the appearance of our streets.

I’d like to see a hotline that people could call to report tag numbers of litterers, with numbers of complaints made available to patrol officers when running someone’s tag information.

  3. If people stop throwing their butts in the road what will all the prison work details do? We need to throw more trash onto the side of the road not less. Otherwise how will these guys pay their debt to society?

  4. rugby fan says:

I imagine it would hurt if someone did this.

However, I must say, I’ve never in all my life seen someone willingly throw their butt on highway.

    Seems silly to me.

  5. Bill Simon says:

Rather than FINE people, perhaps we should offer someone $0.05 or $0.10 per butt to turn in at some collection facility.

I guaran-darn-tee you the roads will then be clear of discarded butts.

  6. bowersville says:

Bill, with all due respect, the price for butt is 4k plus change according to client #9.

The butt is being given a bad rap, after all it was the butt that threw #9 to the curb.
