What’s the status on Fort McPherson getting closed? (I haven’t heard anything about that in awhile) Is this really a gain in numbers, or just shuffling bodies around in the wake of base closures?

Ft. McPherson and Ft. Gillem are still slated to close within the next few years as a result of BRAC recommendations. Ditto for the Navy Supply School in Athens and Naval Air Station Atlanta.

In terms of straight numbers, this is STILL a HUGE net gain for Georgia. McPherson and Gillem are more logistical headquarters (US Army Forces Command, Third US Army/US Army Forces Central Command, US Army Reserve Command, etc.) and doesn’t have large numbers of personnel attached.

The addition of Brigade Combat Teams in real numbers means a huge boost to the economies of Hinesville, Columbus and Augusta, as well.

Another good result of the closure of NAS Atlanta is that the Georgia Army/Air National Guard and Georgia State Defense Force are going to be left with a huge and top notch facility adjacent to Dobbins ARB to move into.

All in all, it is very good for Georgia!
