Dang it, Jace! I was just about to say that. Oh well. I’ll say it anyway.

That triple option won’t scare Georgia. Georgia will win the SEC next year. And Georgia will beat Tech. Book it.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 7, 2007 at 2:58 pm

I wonder if a better headline would have been:

“Tech Pays Money for Navy’s Johnson”

  • Dawgfan // Dec 7, 2007 at 3:03 pm

I agree with Bisher this is no time to weaken the armed services.

Seriously, that was a good move by Tech.

  • Buzz Brockway // Dec 7, 2007 at 3:04 pm

    I’m excited about the hire.

Tech won’t be running the triple option and yes we’ll beat UGA…I guarantee it. ;-)

  • rugby_fan // Dec 7, 2007 at 3:11 pm

FSU will win a national championship within four years.

  • GOPeach // Dec 7, 2007 at 4:24 pm

    Anyone remember Bucky Shamberger?

  • jsm // Dec 7, 2007 at 4:34 pm

    But they still won

  • TPSoCal // Dec 7, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Sorry Donkey, the Gators of Florida will not only win the SEC, but also the BCS Championship! You can take that to the bank. We let y’all win one, just to make the rivalry interesting. Next year it’s a pounding we shall give.

    Go Gators!

  • Icarus // Dec 7, 2007 at 7:43 pm

    “But they still won

  • ToddH // Dec 8, 2007 at 7:07 am

Paul Johnson is a great coach and Tech fans should be very, very happy. I was a Georgia Southern student when he was coach there and we won two national champioships. Great coach who turned around the Navy program. Best hire they could have made.

  • ToddH // Dec 8, 2007 at 7:08 am

Also, he has only had one losing season, his first with Navy.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 8, 2007 at 10:10 am

    Icarus:

I never said anything about the national championship being in football (note my punctuation).

As a matter of fact, the women’s soccer team is pretty flash right now.

  • DutchDawg // Dec 9, 2007 at 1:59 pm

Regardless, Tech has ensured they will have the ugliest coach in America to go along with their “Star Wars Bar scene” student body. Great hire!

  • Romegaguy // Dec 9, 2007 at 8:15 pm

    Thought for the day

You cant spell Sugar without UGA but you can spell National Championship.

  • heroV // Dec 10, 2007 at 9:30 am

Next year UGA plays at Arizona St, at LSU, at Auburn, at South Carolina, and at Kentucky. Winning the SEC will be tough with that road schedule.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 10, 2007 at 3:35 pm

More bad news for Rugby_fan and his hopes of procuring Mark Richt:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/7548486

  • rugby_fan // Dec 10, 2007 at 3:45 pm

I’ve discussed this before Jace and don’t mind doing it again.

From what I understand the terms of Jimbo’s guarantee say that if he doesn’t become head coach he would get a large sum of money.

This next part may seem a little conspiracy theory-like so disregard if you care to do so.

Richt still has a membership at a church in Tallahassee.

Bowden wants to go out on a winning note.

The football program wants to appear as if there will be stability once Bowden leaves so that recruits won’t be scared away.

FSU has a ton of money.

Bowden can wait until they win a BCS Bowl and retire, then FSU could easily afford to pay Fisher off and lure Richt over.

Yes its a little much but it could be the plan.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 12:25 pm

    Debbie0040,

There really isn’t a lot going on in the way of college football this week, but if you want to talk some CFB, I’m here for you. But let’s not start a new thread. We can just revive this one.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Alabama is looking good in overall recruiting…they’re currently third overall.

Too bad for you that Georgia is 2nd in overall recruiting…and I’m pretty sure you guys are coming to Athens next fall!

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:07 pm

Thanks Jace. Look forward to coming to Athens this fall. Look for some Alabama players to transfer to other schools. Rumor is Saban told some that if they wanted playing time, they needed to transfer. Saban is cleaning house. If Alabama had a QB like Stafford, or just a decent QB we would be undefeated…

My hubby is a Georgia grad so we have a divided household…

Georgia is going to have a tougher time than they think with Colt Brennan and Hawaii. They should not under estimate them.

Alabama had a pretty good recruiting weekend.

    http://alabama.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=749366

My relatives in Lousiana still think Les Miles is going to Michigan even though the contract was signed. Miles buyout to go to Michigan stayed the same. They seem to think it is a smoke screen until after the NC game.

    As for FSU and Bowden:http://floridastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=750090

“Bobby Bowden will coach Florida State University for a while but when he decides to step down Jimbo Fisher will be the head coach at Florida State University,” Florida State President T.K. Wetherell said during his opening statement of Monday morning’s press conference.

This is only Hawaii’s 2nd trip in school history to a bowl game that didn’t take place in Honolulu.

Georgia will win by 20 points or more. Book it.

Yeah, I was reading scout.com the other day. Alabama moved up from 4th to 3rd overall. That’s not bad considering the competition for all the good players out there.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:16 pm

“Georgia will win by 20 points or more. Book it.”

    HAHAHAHAHA!

Look at the recent bowl records of undefeated mid major western schools.

    Good luck puppies.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Rugby, I don’t think Richt would leave Georgia, but anything is possible.

I hope Georgia does win by that much..

What do you think about Tebow winning the Heisman? Darren McFadden looked shocked when Tebow was announced.

    I think Tebow deserved it…

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:19 pm

    Rugby,

If you are the “Noles Win” guy, then I will take all of your prognositcations with a grain of salt. ;)

If you are indeed a betting man, you would do well to pay heed to my predictions. Ask Jason Pye. He’ll tell you. I’m like…voodoo.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:20 pm

As much as it pains me to give props to a Florida guy, I thought Tim Tebow deserved it too.

    He had a historic year.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:22 pm

“If you are indeed a betting man, you would do well to pay heed to my predictions.”

Ok fine, but to think UGA will blow out Hawai’i is risible.

Mid majors have an impact in bowl games.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:23 pm

    They will blow out Hawaii.

It will be a blowout of Epic proportions.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:23 pm

And yes, I am a betting man.

    A rambling, betting man even.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:25 pm

Ok then, shall we get into specifics?

    Spread, wager &c.?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:33 pm

    Sure.

Currently, Georgia is an 11-point favorite:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/odds?sportName=CFB

I predict that Georgia will at least beat the spread.

Let me hear what your prediction is before we get into the bet.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:35 pm

Georgia does not beat the spread.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Rugby, The Super Dome will be hostile environment for Hawaii. The sound will be deafening.

I would not bet on that game. It could go either way.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:43 pm

    Rugby,

But even you think that Georgia will win, huh?

Okay. (Debbie you can get in on this too). Here’s the bet:

If Georgia beats the spread, Rugby, you owe me a steak dinner and a beer at my place of choice.

If Georgia does not beat the spread, I owe you the same.

Debbie, since you still owe me a steak dinner from the Lt. Governor’s race, I’ll give you a shot to break even. If I win though, you’ll owe me two dinners? ;)

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:52 pm

I take bets that I know will be settled.

And should you win you want Steak and Shake.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:54 pm

Steak and Shake sounds, good, but I can’t get a beer there. What do you recommend I do?

By the way, if you make a bet with me, I will honor it as I expect you to.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 1:59 pm

I like the sound of that.

May I recommend root beer. Or ginger beer. That’s what GOPeach would do.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:15 pm

I am not going to bet on that game . It could go either way. If Georgia brings their A game then they will beat the spread. If they don’t then Hawaii will win .

Have you ever checked out the Loafing Lepracaun in Duluth?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Actually, a Steak & Shake Vanilla milk shake would be great.

    So we have a bet?

    Debbie,

    Is it expensive? I’m poor.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:17 pm

    A bet we have.

Someone should put this on the front page.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:18 pm

    Rugby,

Where do you live/work? I’m all the way over here in Alpharetta. There is a Steak & Shake close.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:18 pm

I’ll let you post it on the front. I think Erick would get mad at me.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:19 pm

The Laughing Leprechaun was the site of a meetup after the GAGOP Convention so it is probably inside a country club.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:19 pm

    What happens if I win?

There is a Steak and Shake close to where I live, which I expect you to have to come crawling to.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:21 pm

It is not. It is close to a Holiday Inn though.

I will bet two for each of you that LSU will get defeated by Ohio State. If I win, then you two have to wear Fred buttons for two days.

Jace, loved your article on your blog. Check out Drudge Report

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:21 pm

Actually no there is not, I take that back.

But I do love Steak and Shake so I will make the journey.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:21 pm

I left out the word beers. I bet each of you two beers.

They have great Margaritas, too. I promise I will pay this bet for you both…

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:30 pm

    Debbie,

I will take your bet. Ohio State will never beat LSU. Which article are you referring to?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:30 pm

    I love Sam Adams.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:31 pm

A good front page post would be to post the bowl games and let everyone choose who they think the winner is .

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:33 pm

    You posted it.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:34 pm

I say wait until we get closer.

    Jace:

Have you ever had the Utopias? From what I have heard this year’s version is far superior to last year’s which is truly saying something.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:35 pm

I’ve never had the Utopias man. I wish I had though.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:35 pm

LSU is over rated. Alabama almost beat them. They won some very close games that should have been a blowout.

In the SEC Championship game, LSU did not beat Tennessee, Tennessee beat Tennessee.

LSU has also had good luck in some games and that luck is bound to run out.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:40 pm

    Debbie,

I don’t disagree with anything you just said…but for the love of all that is good in this world…OHIO STATE???

Any conversation about overrated teams must begin and end with the words “The Ohio State University”. Ohio State only played ONE team all year that was ranked higher than 20. And that team had its way with the Buckeyes.

A healthy LSU team beat a BCS Bowl Bound Virginia Tech team like 48-7 or something like that. No way the Luckeyes come close to LSU.

I would put a 3 loss SEC team against an undefeated Ohio State Team any day of the week.

The talk about LSU being overrated is true. But to say they are more overrated than Ohio State is just wrong.

*disclaimer* I f*cking hate Ohio State.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:44 pm

I hate LSU the same way. I do agree that OSU is over rated too.

I think the best teams at the end of the season were USC Trojans and Oklahoma.

This past season was unusual to say the least.

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:45 pm

I hope the SEC kicks butt in the bowls with the exception of LSwho

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 2:49 pm

You forgot about the Georgia Bulldogs led by Freshman Phenom Knowshon Moreno!!!

You know, I was thinking…I know I’m a libertarian and all, but I can actually think of one thing that the taxpayers should fund:

If Georgia ever wants to expand Sanford Stadium or build a new one, I think it’s only fair that the taxpayers foot the bill for that.

The Georgia Bulldogs have given so much to this great country over the years. I think the taxpayers OWE it to Georgia for years of outstanding football and for the production of outstanding players.

    Mock NFL Draft

    http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=749667

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 3:13 pm

That’s why I love the Patriots. By far, they are the most well-ran franchise in professional sports.

Assuming they go undefeated the rest of the year, they are poised to be even more dominant by getting a Top 3 draft pick.

    Go Pats!

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 3:21 pm

My pro teams are New Orleans and Green Bay.

Brett Favre is an awesome QB!! I also like Peyton as QB

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    Two words: Tom Brady.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 3:49 pm

    Four words:

    Tom Brady is ruthless.

    Or

    Greatest QB ever=Tom Brady.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Apple is to fruit as Tom Brady is to the greatest QB ever

  • debbie0040 // Dec 11, 2007 at 4:09 pm

Brady is good, too. The Patriots have the hottest team out there now and will probably win another Super Bowl
    this season.

I am still waiting patiently for the Saints to even make it to the Super Bowl…

    Icarus:

If you would like to place a bet with either myself or Jace, feel free.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 11, 2007 at 7:10 pm

    Icarus,

You and I can’t bet. Because I know as a Bulldog, you fully expect UGA to cover the 11 point spread.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 7:30 pm

    Jace:

I am going to propose an addition our bet–blogosphere humiliation.

Whoever loses has to post the blogs they own “(the winner) was right. (Whichever team) did not cover the spread”.

Moreover, for an entire week, every comment that the loser makes must end with the above statement.

    Do you accept?

  • Icarus // Dec 11, 2007 at 7:45 pm

    First Jace, then Rugby.

    Jace,

I usually don’t bet on the Bulldogs. I even usually only put once confidence point on them for pickem games. Betting on the bulldogs for me just seems to cheapen and change the focus of an otherwise near-religious experience.

That said, I really don’t know what to make of the Sugar Bowl. Had these teams met for a regular season game, I think we would have just taken care of business.

The events surrounding UGA’s demotion in the final BCS poll could have the effect of giving the UGA players something to prove, but more often than not, the team that feels dissed loses to the team that’s really glad to achieve the next level.

I’m liking the fact that several sportswriters are calling this game as the upset alert. That should provide some good bulletin board material to keep the UGA players from taking this game for granted.

  • Icarus // Dec 11, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    Rugby,

How you feeling about Jimbo’s chance to win his first game as the semi-official head coach in waiting?

I’m thinking the wager should be a proper three pints at a pub of the winner’s choosing. (Geographic restricitions may apply. Like metro atlanta, at least).

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 7:57 pm

I won’t even dream of taking that bet.

  • Icarus // Dec 11, 2007 at 9:02 pm

3 Pints too much? Or not enough?

    I’m open to counter proposals.

  • Romegaguy // Dec 11, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Debbie betting again… She will welch on this one, too if she loses.

  • rugby_fan // Dec 11, 2007 at 10:01 pm

How about no wagers on the FSU game.

    Actually I will bet this:

Whichever team puts the most points on the board at the end of the game will be declared the winner.

Then again, we’ve been subjected to such egregious offenses as Paul Broun and Erick Erickson that maybe “they” will subvert the process of who wins a football game.

To which I would say; is nothing sacred?

Really though, as long as rugby matches are still decided the same way and Americans can’t figure out who wins a cricket match, I am fine if the process of determining the winner of a football match changes.

  • Icarus // Dec 14, 2007 at 3:26 pm

    Rugby,

Looks like we have a problem. You don’t wish to bet on FSU, I don’t bet on the Bulldogs.

Who do you like in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl?

  • rugby_fan // Dec 14, 2007 at 3:33 pm

    Me to fall asleep.

I’m going to go with Utah, no real reason other than I like saying the U of U.

  • Icarus // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Sportsbook.com has the line as U of U favored by 8.5.

I’ll take the Navy side of that, if you’re interested.

Jace, any Non-UGA boring bowl matchups you care to put in play?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Possibly Virginia Tech vs. Kansas if you’re interested.

VaTech is favored by 3, but I’ll take Kansas to win outright. Your thoughts?

  • Icarus // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:18 pm

I’ve never been able to figure out VA Tech. They win when they shouldn’t, they lose when they shouldn’t. They should beat Kansas, which means they’ll probably lose.

    What are the stakes?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:21 pm

I don’t know…something simple, I’m one of those poor dumb rednecks that GHT always talks about…

How about lunch or something. It’s fairly cheap, and I’d like to meet some more of you regular contributors anyway.

  • Icarus // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:26 pm

It’s not about the monetary value, it’s about the gambling addiction that keeps us poor dumb rednecks buying lottery tickets on the way to our weekend dog fights.

We’ll say lunch somewhere in the Cumberland area?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:28 pm

    Cumberland area if you win.

    Alpharetta area if I win.

  • Jace Walden // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:28 pm

And I’m talking something fancy, like Chick-fil-a

  • rugby_fan // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:45 pm

    Icarus:

    I’m game.

Should I win, you purchase me dinner at Bacchanalia.

If you win, you get a pat on the back.

    Sounds fair, no?

  • Jace Walden // Dec 14, 2007 at 4:45 pm

    Or Taco Bell…

  • Icarus // Dec 14, 2007 at 5:04 pm

    Jace,

Thought Cumberland was a good 1/2 way, but we’ll figure out a reasonable accommodation there.

As for the meal, am I limited to the 8 nugget pack, or can I splurge for the 12 nugget meal if I don’t get the one that comes with slaw?

And Icarus remains Icarus after the meal. I enjoy my anonymity.

    Rugby,

looks like betting with you will have a similar fate as if I was betting with Debbie. Don’t really feel like taking a bet on Colorado this week, though.
