Let’s hope things change for Drjay!
One truly is the loneliest number, especially if it is one vote that keeps you from elected office.Jay Melvin found that out Tuesday when he lost his bid to join the Pooler City Council by one vote, polling 522 votes to Travis B. Cowart Jr.’s 523.
Now, Melvin plans to ask for a recount.
No hard feelings, he said. He just wants to be sure.

i’ve decided that if the recount does not change anything, it will be obvious that the “badger song” is responsible and i will seek retribution. i will seek retribution.

wel the recount happened this morning–i acually did pick up one vote so my total i now 523–not 522 like previously reported–of course his total is now 524–so i’m still down one–we are looking at the case of the guy in the newspaper article who was not allowed to vote (even provisionally) and seeing if we have a case to be made for some sort of remedy–assuming he was a duly registered voter that should have been allowed to cast a ballot–or if anyone else had a similar issue–will keep you updated as events unfold…

Perhaps there is a case for requiring a 50.5% majority (i.e. >1% difference between the candidates) instead of a simple majority in Georgia. Make the threshold such that the loser has no way to claim that a faulty count could have influenced the election since a recount will never overturn such a margin. Then, perhaps the courts could be kept out of our elections.

well my race is actually a plurality race anyway–our council is 6 seats voted on at large by the entire city–over 50% of the voters did vote for me but most of them also voted for several others as well–up to 6. my election aside, if the guy who did not get to vote should have been able to vote and was denied even the opportunity to cast a provisional ballot until it could be figured out that is a much bigger deal since presidential primaries are only a couple of months away–maybe i should be running for sec of state instead of pooler city council…
