Brad Chambers, Sandy Springs’ parks director, is headed to Iraq:
Brad Chambers, the city’s recreation and parks director for nearly a year, has been called to serve in the war in Iraq.
Chambers, 52, is a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserves. He said he was told last week his skills as an intelligence officer are needed. He’ll serve a 12-month tour of duty in Iraq.
Chambers, who has a grown daughter, said the notification wasn’t entirely a surprise.
He had been activated and served several months at the U.S. emergency command headquarters in Germany, following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Given the ongoing war, he said he knew it was a possibility.
“Anybody who has not been recalled, activated, has that in the back of their head,” he said. “Sooner or later, you’re probably going to go.”
No word from Rep. Wendell Willard or Rusty Paul as to whether they are going to try to have him fired or not.
All joking aside, I wish Mr. Chambers as well as the rest of our soldiers.
