Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charles Bannister will have an opponent in next year’s GOP Primary:
Green, a first-term district commissioner, ended months of speculation Friday with the announcement she’ll run for chairman. Her name will be below incumbent Bannister’s on 2008 Republican primary ballots.
“Gwinnett needs strong, decisive leadership to move this county forward on key issues such as transportation, public safety and deterioration of our neighborhoods,” Green said. “It’s the job of the chairman to provide comprehensive countywide leadership and we’ve got to make some countywide changes now, before it’s too late for Gwinnett.”
Bannister, who served as a state representative and mayor of Lilburn before taking the county helm in 2005, declined to comment.
“I don’t want to make it personal,” he said. “I don’t know that this early in the ballgame I have anything to say.”
