Another often-ignored journalist of that era is Ira Harkey, a former newspaper publisher in Pascagoula, Miss. He was the only publisher in the state during the 1950s and ’60s who editorialized against segregation. He was rewarded with a Pulitzer Prize and punished by his readers with pulled ads, canceled subscriptions and death threats. At one time someone even firebombed his office.
