Little known fact: when the Federal government was looking for launch sites for Project Apollo (later the Kennedy Space Center), one of the sites that made the final list was our own Cumberland Island, Georgia! Unfortunately, the sands and soil of the island was found to not be compact enough to support the weight of proposed Saturn V launch pads. Also, the cost / benefit analysis of putting the Apollo pads next to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station where Project Mercury and Project Gemini launched from held considerable sway. (Source).
