I did not like Whitehead’s campaign one bit, despite my affection for the MAN.

I thought that his opposition was terribly weak, however. I still think so.

This was a spanking for the GOP hierarchy and financiers.

Yet another wake-up call for a party gone off track.

The fact is the fault lies completely with Jim Whitehead.

His bonehead comments, whether freelanced or staff recommended, to make this an Athens v. Augusta contest completely backfired. There are not 5,000 Republicans in Clarke County. Yet Paul Brown pull that many or more.

Whitehead’s anti-Athens comments (again, planned or off-the-cuff) incensed enough Athenians to turn out for revenge. Clearly, even liberal Democrats turned out to vote for Paul Brown (amazing to comtemplate) simply because of Whitehead’s anti-Athens rhetoric.

Divide and conquer? Not this time.

That and regarding the rest of the district outside of Augusta as insignificant. It’s nice Whitehead won his backyard but he definitely lost outside of that.

Most of the outstanding votes are in Columbia and Richmond counties, where Whitehead is winning 2-1 to 3-1. Look for it to get a lot closer.

Looking at the numbers it looks like this is beyond a Athens vs. Augusta race. It looks to be Whitehead’s state senate district and Lake Oconee vs. the rest of the district.
