Christy and I just got back. We did not stay for the speechifying. Steve Croy, I met your better half and missed seeing you. You were lost in the crowd.

Anyway, Fred and Jeri are simply two of the nicest people I know. Jeri, in particular, is awesome. I’ve been to a number of these things before and this one really impressed me by not just the number of people, but the number of prominent people in the room. I won’t mention names lest I mention someone who is not yet on board publicly, but was there (exception being host couples).

I expect a lot of money flowed through. The general sense from the people I talked to was that they had all, to a person, flirted with every other candidate — some having been wooed and some having been pressured to support other candidates — and came up wanting. They’ve found what they wanted in Fred Thompson.

It’s very funny. When Fred got started there were a lot of people looking at him solely because he was not one of the other guys. Now that people are actually looking at him, at least in this crowd, they really, really like what they see. Fred has a commanding presence in the room and was taller than most everyone else.

We’ll be doing a podcast tomorrow. I’ll link to it.

Oh, and on a final note, I finally met David Shafer in person. We’ve known each other in email for several years and it was great to finally meet him in person. And my Lord in Heaven has Trey Staton grown up. I do believe he is taller than Senator Staton now. Yes, I did show off my iPhone too.

So does he have any policy, or are you just supporting him on vague superficialities?

No offense meant by that, but its about the only thing the Thompson-ator has going for him.

  2. Mike-El says:

It’s official. Fred’s Peach Pundit code name is “McDreamy.”

    Glad to hear he’s tall.

rugby_fan, I guess that depends on what you’re looking for in a candidate.

    As for me,
I just want a candidate that understands national security and not only wants our borders secured and our current immigration laws enforced, but actually gets WHY we are opposed to shamnesty and isn’t afraid to say it. I want a candidate that understands the second amendment and not only understands the importance of appointing conservative judges to stop judicial tyranny, but also understands how precious life is.

I want a candidate that won’t pander to European socialists and is willing to tell the Mexican government how things are, as well as being willing to actually say how useless the UN is.

I also feel it is extremely important to nominate a candidate that can articulate conservatism in a way that everyone can understand, to counter the demagoguery of the left. I like a candidate who can explain why tax cuts are good for our economy and can show man-made global warming for the joke that it is. It would be refreshing to see a candidate explain why we should back Israel and make damn sure Iran never gets a nuke.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a candidate that see’s CAIR for what it is? Even better to have a candidate that calls out Democrats for being the defeatist losers that they are.

While we’re dreaming the impossible dream and looking for this perfect candidate, I’d also like to throw in that I would love to nominate a candidate who can use the new media to his advantage and get around old media liberal bias. I don’t know where we’d ever find such a candidate, but if we can find him, we’ll do well in 2008. 🙂

The key word above was “presence”. I have never watched law and order, neither has my gay rupublican brother – and both of us are looking at Fred as a viable candidate! We both also like Newt – maybe in the cabinet if he doesnt run, but when we were talking about candidates yesterday, the word “presence” kept emerging when we spoke of Fred. That in itself does not make a candidate – but I also heard on Cavatto on Friday that when he interviewed Fred, there was NO onterage (sp?)! I like that – he does not seem to be full of himself. Now, I do understand that he has not actually gotten into the race and maybe that had something to do with no security, but I think people are impressed with his “everyday guy” mentality. Will continue to watch him, but don’t for a minute believe that it is the “actor” people are looking at, here are two that have never seen him on screen!
