Ron Paul ran for president representing the LP 20 years ago, not in 2000.

I don’t know about Jones & Liberator, but can tell you I could not vote for RP back then, had I wanted to. I was too young to vote.

I did not accuse you of such. Simply stated, we are going to be stuck with douchebags until we have a truly competitive primary and not this petty squabbling among a bunch of corrupt elites over who gets the crown. Paul is the only candidate who *actually* believes the government has specifically enumerated powers and that the president does not have unlimited scope to pursue his goals; thus, he is the only candidate I can vote for. I’m sick of what passes for leadership in this country. Pardon Libby? Why, after you let him hang out to dry for the whole trial process? We should be much tougher on those guys, not more lenient. If you or I break the law, who cares? If the President or his appointee breaks the law, it’s a disaster. Ignoring congressional subpeonas, getting the power to declare US citizens enemy combatants with no evidence, issuing FBI agents the power to write “national security letters” so they don’t have to go before a judge to spy? What the hell is wrong with this place? I’ll tell you, it’s because people like Ron Paul CAN never win. Guiliani, Thompson, McCain, Obama, Clinton or whoever don’t care a rat’s ass about whether or not you support them on some blog or straw poll…this process is a means to an end, that end is power: power without measure over a broken system that can’t check it anymore. I don’t know if Ron Paul is capable of leading this country – I’ve never met the guy. Is Guiliani? He was mayor on 9/11/01, big deal, it’s 2007. The difference is, although I don’t know Paul, his record proves that he believes in the framework our government was founded upon, so I can trust him. I can’t say that about any of the rest. I do trust the framers, so do yourself a favor and give the one guy who doesn’t think he is anointed to be your next king a little bit more credit for not letting Washington go to his head.

Until we stop saying “oh this guy is great but he can never win”, we ARE going to be stuck with the hacks. Guiliani is a smuck, McCain is a populist, Romney is our John edwards, Thompson is an insider par-excellence. Indy and cf72, I’ll be joining you in voting for Paul, and telling everyone I know to do so as well. The US can’t afford to have anyone but a strict constructionist as president after THIS president’s term in office. Immigration, the war, health care, defence policy are all very important, but not anywhere near as crucial to our way of life as checks & balances and federalism. Those are the whole shebang- and very much in danger unless the people get off their asses and realize that we are letting ourselves get screwed. I agree with cf72, Paul’s problem isn’t the general election, it’s the primary. We can do something about that.

The only Republican I am voting for in 2008 will be Ron Paul, unless Newt runs (I have issues with him, but he sees the GOP’s problem with utter clarity.)

All the rest are the epitome of hackdom, with no courage to blast Bush out of the water for what he has done to us all.

Mouthpieces for this administration, they doom their party.

Jason and Mike, your points are well-taken.

Ron Paul’s odds are extremely low. But here is another fact: no pro-Iraq War candidate will win in Nov 2008. Simple. Not Thompson, Giuliani, McCain, Romney, Huckabee, etc. So the way I see it, Paul has just as good a chance of winning the White House as any of the other GOP candidates this cycle.

If Ron Paul, was the nominee, the Democrats war advantage would be neutralized, and then we’d have a real debate about free markets vs socialism, low vs high taxes, less gov’t spending vs more. Now, that’s a debate conservatives actually CAN win in Nov 2008.

Ron Paul is actually electable…in fact, he’s been elected 10 times.

I am a Ron Paul supporter, but Ron Paul is not electable for President. His campaign is, at best, a place for disenfranchised libertarians, conservatives and some in the anti-war crowd. I support him because he is the candidate that I believe will work to uphold the Constitution and fight for liberty.

But to say that he actually has a chance to win or that he is electable, outside of his Congressional seat, is a dream.

I was there and I am one of those meaningless votes, thank you very much.

With the sad, swift and steady demise of the Republican Party, I would argue that there is no such thing a meaningless vote. This was a simple straw poll, so I will not magnify its importance. But we spent our own time and money to help support this local Cobb County GOP event…something neither McCain nor Rudy supporters saw fit to do. Only by regaining our true conservative roots will the party regain its national majority.

Given Paul’s domination of all the post-debate polls on the MSNBC/FOXNews/CNN sites, I’m not surprised at all. The man can flat turn out the meaningless vote.
