Politics and the Video Blog

Meet Boston City Councillor, John Tobin:

I’ve no idea if Councillman Tobin above tacks Red or Blue, but it doesn’t matter; what matters is that he takes communicating with his constituents very seriously. Not only does he blog, his video blogging, or vlog, initiative has been nominated for a Golden Dot award, Best Vlog of 2006, by George Washington University’s Institute for Politics, Democracy & the Internet.

Take note, Georgia politicians! Leveraging the Internet as a marketing and communications tool is there for you all. It’s cheap, fun, timely and can pay remarkable media dividends.

But the key is to be accessible, transparent and honest, or the whole thing will backfire. You have to ask yourself, “Can you handle the Internets?” If so, go for it!

For me, this is all very exciting as I happen to be having dinner with some videobloggers tonight, and one is the very wacky, very innovative, politically-minded social media guru, Steve Garfield. Garfield is the mind behind John Tobin’s videoblogging initiative, as Tobin explains in the above video.

  1. Sarawara says:

Tobin is definitely a Democrat–he represents one of the most liberal districts in Boston (Jamaica Plain) where I used to live before I moved to Atlanta. Then again, the D is a pretty safe bet for any elected official in Boston.

  2. LoyaltyIsMyHonor says:

Sonny should have a “vlog.” The we could really see his “backside”

  3. drjay says:

here you go grayson–i had lunch w/ this dude this afternoon–i believe he has a myspace page too–but he is attempting to use the “new media” to get his message out–i thought you would be the person who might him most interesitng, even if you are not on the same page politically
