Clark Howard Ponders Value of Becoming Mayor of Atlanta

Creative Loafing is saying Clark Howard is a definite “maybe” to run for Mayor of Atlanta next go-round.

  1. CobbGOPer says:

He’d make a great candidate and maybe put up a fight, but I really don’t see Atlanta – with all the associated racial politics that accompanies participating in city government – electing a white mayor any time soon.

Besides, all they’ll have to do is trot out John Lewis, Shirley Franklin, Emma Darnell and John Eaves to do a commercial implying that if Clark Howard is elected Mayor, school children won’t be able to go to school and people will be lynched and firehosed and attacked with dogs…

  2. SpaceyG says:

CobbGOP — let ’em go for it. It’ll be the rope they use to hang themselves with, given the terrible PR fallout from the last commercial, which had even loads of hardcore Dems denouncing it. Eaves did end-up winning, but that tired ‘ole race card train has long left the station. That’s seriously the last time that old-school tact can seriously be trotted out. Especially given the rapid transformation of City of Atlanta demos. Heck, white people might even start voting now in City elections there are so many moving ITP. Weirder things have happened.

  3. Redcatcher says:

I would love to see Clark as mayor of Atlanta. Perhaps he could bring some fiscal responsibility to the city. It would be an uphill battle to rein in the habits of many employees practiced over the years, but it would be fun to watch. When Howard got on a roll, we would be able to hear the screams in South Georgia.

  4. buzzbrockway says:

Clark Howard would absolutely make Atlanta live within it’s means. Imagine all the City Officials driving to Birmingham to get those cheap airline tickets. No more City credit cards. Hey, this could be good.

  5. Decaturguy says:

I really don’t see Atlanta – with all the associated racial politics that accompanies participating in city government – electing a white mayor any time soon.

Hey, Cobb, get out of the county every once in a while. The white population of the City of Atlanta is inching towards 50% again and I’d bet that right now the white population might make up a majority of voters.

In any event, Clark Howard is one of those personalities that, I think, transcends the race barrier.

  6. Jen says:

    1. The census numbers are 7 years old – look what’s happened to Midtown in that time period.

    2. Percentage of population living in Atlanta does not equal percentage of people who vote in Atlanta.

  7. Ben Marshall says:

DecaturGuy is right, and recent census statisitics in the last two years point to the city becoming close to 50% white.

Also, with a migration of white voters into Atlanta, there has been a migration of black voters to the suburbs of the city.

  8. Icarus says:

Are you considering the dead people that vote as white? (because they’re ghosts?)

  9. CobbGOPer says:

I know there’s a great deal of construction going on in Midtown. But that does not mean the population of persons of pallor is close to 50%. If you’ve got more recent stats, I’d love to see them.

  11. CobbGOPer says:

Then you need to cross-post, Chris! Don’t you have front-page privileges here?

  12. CobbGOPer says:

Er, maybe not, I guess. Though if Bobby freakin Kahn can have front page privileges here, I don’t see why you can’t…

  13. The Comma Guy says:

The only thing I fear about is losing a hero. As with any political race, I fear that every skeleton in Clark’s closet will be dragged out and paraded around. I’d love to see what he can do and believe that he does transcend race with his advice and help. But he won’t bow and scrape to certain elements who will work to destroy him.

  14. atlantaman says:

Cathy Woolard has already proved a white person can win citywide if the right coalitions are put together. Keep in mind the white population has increased since her tenure as City Council President.

And don’t say the position or the election was low profile, Michael Julian Bond and the machine put everything it had into beating her.

  15. MidGaDawg says:

If any white person could win, a popular and smart-sounding (but not condescending) TV personality like Clark Howard could.

  16. GOPeach says:

    Let’s see…

We could have a new college in town-

    ATLANTA -CLARK University-
Never mind- we already have that!

Maybe Howard should get on WCLK!

  17. Mr. T says:

Cynical as it may be, Cobb GOPer’s first post is right. It may have caused an uproar but those John Eaves ads motivated many black voters and I don’t think it would be a surprise to see those tactics used again, especially if Clark got some traction beyond this burst of adoration he’s getting now. Ultimately, this widespread show of love for Clark may satisfy him enough to shelve the run and keep collecting those fat checks. That’d be a lot to give up to put up with being Mayor of Atlanta and its bloated bureacracy.
