Erick also has a worthwhile write up on Redstate and points out Thompson will be on Cavuto today and speak about this. Icarus points out the Cavuto interview in another thread here on the Pundit.

  2. GAWire says:

Man I hate this for Thompson. He’s a really good guy … good Senator … and good actor (his role in Die Hard 2 is still one of my favs)! He would make a good Pres or perhaps even better VP candidate too!

How does this affect the Presidential landscape? Well, simply put, Thompson can be removed from speculation. We never thought he was really going to run but did think that he would be included in the speculation for a few more months, which will impact polling and fundraising numbers. Now, Thompson won’t be a player anymore. At this point, the GOP nominee possibles are slimming, and Newt is the only realistic non-announced darkhorse candidate, with McCain’s flailing and Rudy’s downward spiral still somehow leading the pack. Romney might as well be a foregone conclusion.

Has anyone else gotten used to “Madame President” yet?!?

  3. Doug Deal says:

To the contrary. Unless Thompson says that this rules him out, I would not speculate on it. Lymphoma sounds scary, but the type he has is so non agressive that he will die of old age long before this disease.

I think the fact that he is addressing it now, would be more indicative of him trying to tamp down the embers of fear and misinformation about a disease people may not understand.

  4. GAWire says:

Doug, he’s done (as far as the Presidential race goes). He was never going to get in.

However, I do believe that he is seriously thinking about it. Remember, he said that he’s not ruling out a run. So, releasing the info about his cancer could be a test to see what support does.

When it comes right down to it, he won’t do it, not for real at least. He might make a go at it, but it won’t happen.

  5. David says:

Too bad. He would have been a formidable guy. He would have really shaken up the race on the Republican side. Rudy and McCain can breathe again.

  6. Icarus says:

I’m with Doug on this one. I think it’s a test to get it out early, let the public get educated, and see how his support looks in the next few polls. If he stays in, it makes his potential V.P. pick a bit more important than usual.

  7. bowersville says:

Doug & Icarus are correct. I just heard it out of Fred Thompson’s mouth on Cavuto. Fred wanted this out for the reaction of the American people.

According to Thompson, he is still very much considering running for POTUS. His decision is very much dependent on our reaction.

He further stated he was reading the blogs. He didn’t mention Redstate by name, but you know he’s reading it. Encourage him there.
