I know Bull already mentioned this, but I gotta say this is just crap. Rugby_fan, say it with me. This bill must die.
After two of the most expensive judicial contests in Georgia history, Republicans legislators introduced a proposal Monday to set up a taxpayer-funded pot to finance judicial election campaigns.
The publicly financed campaigns would be optional for judicial candidates and funded through voluntary checkoffs on state income tax returns. The bill would also set up a “rescue fund” for publicly financed candidates whose opponents raked in excessive donations from private donors or independent expenditures.
Rep. Lindsey, first I am ashamed, ashamed, ashamed of you for working with Common Cause — an organization dedicated to shutting the little guy out of politics and entrenching incumbents. Shame on you.
Second, judicial races are already purportedly non-partisan in this state. They can’t raise money with a party apparatus (or at least shouldn’t, and I do support you stopping all that), so they need to get out and get aggressive.
This is just bad, stupid politics. State funding of elections wastes taxpayer money and is always a bad idea. You are restricting my right to participate in an electoral race and you are restricting the candidate’s right to seek support.
Are you really a Georgia Republican? Geez.
Representative Lindsey responds here.
