Matt Barnwell has a lengthy write up in the Macon Telegraph about the potential mayoral candidates in Macon.
Basically, it will come down to a half dozen or so black candidates and one white guy. Anyone who knows anything about Macon knows that the election will come down to race more than qualifications — it’s a sad, but very true fact. And once into race, it gets into connections. So, I can predict right now that Lance Randall will more likely than not take the lead. There will probably be a runoff. He will win the runoff.
Nonetheless, former Democratic State Representative Robert Reichert is intent on running. The rumor is that he will pull a Bloomberg and run as a Republican to bypass the Democratic primary and get straight to the general election. That is a real possibility. Reichert is rumored to have long wanted Macon and Bibb County consolidated to improve his chances of winning. It looks, however, like he’ll go for it anyway.
The wild card in all of this is David Lucas. Were Lucas to enter, it would pit the Randall family against the Lucas family, which could make for a very interesting dynamic.
And that is your daily dose of Macon politics.
