Good for Len Walker

He wants to change the Cynthia McKinney highway back to Memorial Highway. Actually, though, when I saw the AJC headline, I thought it would be about the Billy McKinney HIghway, which you and I know as the north side of 285. I passed those signs on Friday and wondered why on earth we’d want to keep a highway named after someone who can’t help himself but the blame the J-E-W-S for everything.

Bill Stephens tried that a few years ago on one of the late nights just before the end of the session, if I recall…it was hilarious to see all the crazy Dems up in arms over their beloved McKinney’s and Stephens slyly grinning as he sufferred the brunt of the democratic black caucuses wrath…utlimately, I believe he withdrew his amendment – I don’t remember exactly – should have passed it back then.

  2. Ben Marshall says:

I believe it passed the Senate, but didn’t pass the House because the Dems were still in control of the House at that point.

  3. I agree atlantaman. I would love a law that says that nothing can be REnamed. Next time the powers that be want to honor some illustrious georgian let them name something new.

Also (I’m on a roll now) it drives me up the wall that when something does get named after someone it has to be their entire damn name! So that’s the corrolary to the no renaming rule, no full names either.

I’m sure there is a more recent REnaming but the most recent one that comes to mind is the renaming of Bankhead Hwy to Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. If one were to rename bankhead I would have pulled for crackhead hwy but if Mr H was worth honoring what would have been wrong with just Hollowell Parkway? Does any other city regularly put peoples middle names on streets?

    whew, ranting over

As much as I dislike McKinney, Sen. Butler made a good point about this being really a DeKalb county issue, which Sen. Walker has no interest in other than some political grandstanding before McKinney is gone and the GOP can’t get any more mileage out of her.

Erick, wouldn’t you tell some Atlanta senator who wanted to rename something in Macon because he found it offensive to butt out? I believe there is a Lester Maddox Parkway or some such road in Ellijay. Anyone up that direction want folks from Decatur telling them what to name their road?

I wish the road hadn’t been named after her in the first place, and I probably prefer to see it changed back. But Sen. Walker is just grandstanding, nothing else. Surely he has something more valuable to do with his time?

  5. Jas says:

The Lester and Virginia Maddox Parkway is actually Northside Pkwy from GA Tech all the way out to Paces Ferry

  6. Decaturguy says:

This is stupid grandstanding, Erick. I dislike Cynthia McKinney and think she is an embarassment, but what does a State Rep. from Loganville care about a road in Dekalb County. She’s been defeated, she ain’t coming back, lets leave it along.

If we rename her road, I think you are opening up the door for a bunch of other disreputable people who have roads named after them all across Georgia. Why stop with Cynthia? Rev. Lowery has a road named after him and he said some nasty things about our great President.
