Well this sucks for them.

A high-ranking Republican state lawmaker and former candidate for attorney general has been hit with a $347,318 lien for delinquent federal income taxes, court records show.

The Internal Revenue Service says state Rep. David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) owes individual income taxes, penalties and interest from as far back as tax year 1996 and as recently as 2004.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Revenue says that as of July, state Rep. Lester G. Jackson (D-Savannah) owes $15,265 in state income taxes, penalties, fees, and interest from tax year 2003. State revenue officials filed a request in the State Court of Fulton County on Monday to garnish Jackson’s monthly state paycheck to pay off his debt.

  1. David says:

Sounds like the opposition research team has been cranked up! I’ve done alot of oppo research over the years and finding a tax lien on an opponent is almost like Nirvana!

  2. Brian from Ellijay says:

This news about Rep. Ralston is old. I think the AJC did a story on it like last year, maybe longer.

Looks to me like the wanted to report on Jackson, but needed a Republican to sound balanced. Pretty bad reporting.

  3. DoubleDawg3 says:

Brian is right, this news is kind of old…as it was mentioned last year, BUT that amount was a lower dollar amount that he owed the IRS – like $30,000+, not $300,000. Hopefully he’ll get it straightened out – he’s a good Conservative leader in the House.

I’m not sure about oppo research against Ralston…it would have to be from another Republican — Jack White seeking a return maybe?

I don’t know anything about Jackson or his district, so I can’t make guesses on it.

  4. Brian from Ellijay says:

David will not be challenged. He is highly popular and knows everybody in all three counties. When he ran against Jack in the primary, everyone said they liked Jack, but had known David their whole life. I like Jack, but he is happy with making money at the bank right now. David is the right man right now.

PS-there is always a chance that the current GOP chair for Gilmer will try to run, she has before, but is a nut and highly unpopular and will swiftly get her ass kicked.
