It appears that Democratic Congressman-elect Hank Johnson is having fun in Washington during his freshman orientation. What was his first order of business? To find the Capitol Hill police officer who had the much-publicized scuffle with Rep. Cynthia McKinney and thank him.
From the AP:
“Quite frankly, I’ve been looking forward to meeting him,” Johnson said in an interview at the hotel where he’s staying a few blocks from the Capitol during new-member orientation. “That’s just something that needed to be done.”
“I apologized to him for any embarrassment the incident may have caused him or his family, and he appreciated that,” Johnson added. “I told him if he ever asked me to comply, that I would, that he wouldn’t have to worry about that.”
I got a kick out of the line, “That’s just something that needed to be done.” I don’t know if “that” refers to thanking the officer or tossing McKinney out of Congress (in more ways than one). Either way, it is a pretty funny way to make your first appearance on the Hill. Kudos, Hank.
