RIP: Erk Russell

Former Georgia Southern coach Erk Russell was killed in a car crash:

Russell was delivered by ambulance to the Statesboro hospital at about 9:10 a.m. and was pronounced dead on arrival, Bigley said. He said Russell’s death was “not from injuries” related to the wreck.

“There hasn’t been a thorough examination, but the speculation is that he may have had a stroke,” Bigley said.

Russell, who earned national prominence during 17 years as the University of Georgia’s defensive coordinator, moved to Georgia Southern to build the school’s first football team since 1941. He won Division I-AA championships in 1985, ’86 and ’89.

It was certainly a sad day for Georgia. Erk was one of the best coaches ever. GSU wouldn’t be what it is today without him. By the way he was on his way to do a radio spot for Gov. Perdue on Friday and Gov. Perdue was at the service yesterday. That meant a lot to all of us Eagles.
    Perdue for a New Georgia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
