Perdue: Guard troops on border helping stop drug trade

From AccessNorthGA:

[Governor Sonny] Perdue visited Georgia’s troops helping fortify the nation’s Southern border [last week] and said they were key to preventing drug smuggling operations from Mexico involving illegal aliens, such as the record methamphetamine bust … in Gainesville.

The 341 pounds of crystal meth was found in a house occupied by illegal immigrants in Gainesville. Perdue said the people were not the only thing crossing the border.

“That’s exactly where the meth is coming. It’s prearranged, and they can get through there. That’s why the meth is showing up right here in our state,” he said.

He said he told the troops during his visit that border control was the key to stop drug smuggling.

“I said, ‘You are the front line defense for drug control in Atlanta Georgia,’ and that is exactly what they were doing,” he said.

Perdue praised Georgia’s National Guard Troops for helping keep America secure.

  1. John Douglas says:

Our soldiers on the border are to be saluted for their service to America. Most if not all of these same people just got back from Iraq and are willing to put their personal lives on hold for another year to work to stop the illegal flow of immigrants into our country.

We are fortunate indeed in Georgia and in America to have uniformed personnel of the calibur that we have. They work tirelessly for our security and safety and do so for low pay and few “attaboys.” Working with them as Chairman of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

As we approach the 5th anniversary of 9/11/01, please take the time to express your gratitude to our military and show your appreciation for their hard work. They are all that seperates us from chaos and darkness and I for one am very, very proud of all of them.

  2. Dawgfan says:

Did anyone see the Bobby Kahn quote from the AJC article on Sonny’s visit to the GA Guard Troops on the border? In typical fashion Democrats would rather attack the Commander in Chielf than support the troops. Who says there is a differece between the National and State Democrats?

  3. Jeff says:

Drugs should be legal. That would discourage people from illegally running across the border. It would encourge local entrepreneurship in the world’s most valuable industry. We can tax it, and hey…people would get killed over the drug trade as much. Imagine a Miami, Florida, or a South West Atlanta where children and parents do not have to worry about getting hit by stray bullets, and think of all the money we would save on mandatory minimum sentencing practices. People,…it just makes sense. Oh yeah, and the National Gaurd is doing a good job.
