Warning to Peach Pundit readers who may drive in DeKalb County.

Don’t get in a wreck in (unincorporated) DeKalb while talking on your cell phone:

ATLANTA – Drivers who cause a traffic accident while talking on a cell phone will face a fine of up to $500 under a law that took effect Tuesday in DeKalb County.

The law, believed to be the first of its kind in Georgia, sanctions drivers whose improper usage of a mobile phone was a “contributing factor” in a collision causing death, injury or damage.

County officials said the law applies in unincorporated DeKalb, not its cities. About 80 percent of the county is unincorporated.

I like this. Instead of banning something out right the county says you just have to take responsiblity if you screw up.

I like it because my car nearly was destroyed by someone in an SUV, making a left hand turn, dialing a number or looking at their phone, in Dekalb on Monday.

What about if you get in a wreck while eating a slice of hot pizza? Or, drinking a cup of hot coffee? Or, if your eyes happen to lock onto the hot babe in the car going by with a cellphone held next to HER ear?

Damn! Where’s Bruce Harvey when you need these questions answered?
