Operation Sandbox

Here’s a feel good story for your Monday:

AP: Georgia group sends troops thanks, goods

SNELLVILLE, Ga. — When Virginia Pearson sent a care package to a Marine in Iraq, she had no idea he would eventually become her son-in-law.

She has gained even more than that through her work as the head of Operation Sandbox GA, a group of volunteers in Georgia who have sent packages to more than 32,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in less than two years.

When Pearson sent her first package in March 2003 to Marine Sgt. James Kines, she asked her daughter, Julie, who was home visiting from the University of Miami, to write a quick letter to Kines. From there, the two started exchanging e-mails, and they met when Kines was home on leave. Nine months after the first letter, Kines proposed in December 2003. The two, both 26 now, were married in April.
