I have said it before and I will say it again…..I’ll take Charlie Norwood, John Linder, Lynn Westmoreland, Nathan Deal and Newt Gingrich supporting Gary Black over a part time state senator anytime. But as they say around here – thanks for sharing. This time tomorrow night we’ll ALL be supporting Gary Black for Agriculture Commissioner.

  2. CHelf says:

    Waterboy,

Don’t forget the all-star cast for Ralph Reed as well. Are you saying a majority of GOP voters are incompetent for siding with a list of part-time senators for Cagle?

  3. waterboy says:

No Ben…didn’t bash anybody – nice try though. Funny, you call ME a loser.

CH – Cagle won on hard work, grassroots campaigning and a boatload of volunteers – not because of support from fellow senators. Give Cagle more credit than that.

Gary Black wins this thing tonight so y’all can sit and home and whine or get on board with the Gary Black team. Hope you’ll choose to be active for Black.

  4. SOUTHERNCOMFORT says:

I think Gary has the kiss of death with those endorsments. Brian will win waterboy and you guys will need to fall in line. We will make a statment today, and tell Gary if he needs Brian’s cell number for that call he’s going to be making tonight let me know.haha

  5. lobbyga says:

Senator Shafer is one very fortunate politician. Since his defeat at the hand of Ralph Reed several years ago, he has worked his way back and the primary elections this year have lifted him to new respect and power.

He almost single-handedly helped Cagle do the unthinkable and defeat Reed.

He is today on the verge of ending the political career of one of his other political enemies, Sen. Bill Stephens.

Only in the case of Sen. Kemp does he appeared to have backed the wrong horse.

I predict significant things in his future. He will likely be either the next Majority Leader or President Pro Tempore of the Senate. He has waited patiently and worked hard, but the prize will soon be within his grasp.

Many lobbyists who work in Georgia anticipate a significant move on his part in the coming weeks. He may yet control the Republican party in Georgia.

    Congratulations Senator Shafer.

  6. Senator David Shafer says:

I appreciate Jason posting my endorsements. I hope my thoughts on these races are helpful to others in making their own decisions. You can rest assured that I will be 100% behind our Republican ticket tomorrow whether all my picks are victorious today or not.

Let me also say that Casey Cagle deserves the credit for Casey Cagle’s victory. He had the courage to run when virtually no one thought he could win, and he worked harder than any candidate I have ever supported. But he is not Lieutenant Governor yet! Our focus now needs to be on his and the other general election races.

As for me, I am quite happy with my new assignment as Chairman of the Senate Regulated Industries and Public Utilities Committee. I appreciate Eric Johnson and Tommie Williams appointing me to this role, and if Casey Cagle wants me to continue in it, I will be pleased to do so.

  7. Brian from Ellijay says:

5 out of 6 is not bad. Great Job Senator Shafer. WE do appreciate your leadership and your committment to service. Thank you for standing up for true experience and for great conservatives in our state and our party. We can forgive you for the liberal from Fulton, and realize that you will be wholly behind our nominee Bill Stephens.

  8. Chris says:

Ha. You make it sound like not being selected for the thankless job of chairman is a career ender. Sure David lost to Ralph for party chairman, but David was almost immediatly elected to the State Senate where he has done an excellent job.

David introduced a bill to get rid of the state income tax in 2005, helped reduce waste and even when he wants the government to help out, as in the Stem Cell bank, he finds ways to make sure the taxpayers aren’t on the hook to pay for it.

We need more legislators like him.

  9. landman says:

Senator,I dont know what to say about all of LobbyGa’s comments other than you chose the right horse in the Ag race regardless of whether he wins today or not,as there is no doubt our good friend is a natural born leader.

Thanks for all you do for the Party and all you did for the Cagle Team.

  10. Brian from Ellijay says:

If Karen is the nominee, I am voting for Shafer for SOS. I hear the Senator still has signs and stickers stored away somewhere. Write-In Shafer campaign.

  11. waterboy says:

As I was saying in the very first post on this thread….good-bye Kemp. HELLOOOO Gary Black! Now the Republican team can unseat Irvin.

Congrats to Karen Handel as well.

  12. shep1975 says:

You can’t fault a Senator for supporting a fellow senator. Believe it or not, some of these guys actually become friends with each other. I have known David since his run for Sec. of State in 1996. He follows Newt Gingrich’s philosophy of not giving up just because you didn’t win the first time. He also makes great investments in those around him. Plus the guy has a great last name! (Shafer is German for Shepherd).

  13. 4ofspades says:

    Brian,
Good luck voting for Senator Shafer for SoS. Actually Senator Shafer is going to do us all proud in the Senate.

Interesting that you showed up at the Handel Victory party tonight. In the future, do the Handel a favor, and stay away. You are a hindrance. Go back to signs. On second thought, do Georgia Republicans a favor and stay out of Georgia Republican politics.

  14. debbie0040 says:

I was VERY shocked to see Brian in attendance. Maybe it was to quitely return stolen signs πŸ™‚

Brian has burned his bridges with many people. I see he now surrounds himself with Teenage Republicans…Glad they aren’t female.

  15. educatedvoterga says:

I congratulate Senator Shafer and followed his suggestions in the primary and run off. I am only sorry Kemp did not win, thus giving Senator Shafer a perfect record.

He has been a very consistent and dependable leader for the party and for the Georgia Senate. I could not think of a more deserving leader for our Senate. He should have run for Lt. Governor himself, but it would be great if the Senators recognized his abilities by making him their majority leader or Pro Tem.

I remember when he was defeated by Reed for party chair and even his race for Secretary of State some years ago. I am so glad he kept on working hard for his values. He is a true moderating voice for mainstream Republicans. Perhaps if Senator Cagle runs for governor in four years Senator Shafer can be pursuaged to run for Lt. Governor. In the meantime get rid of the extremest leadership of the legislature and see how far we can go with Senator Shafer.

  16. Brian from Ellijay says:

The statement about supporting a write in campaign was a jest. I am a Republican and will support the republican ticket. As republicans we have a very strong ticket, and I look forward to supporting each and everyone.

Steve/Spades, we are on the same team now. Yes I saw you too. Now that the primary is behind us it is time to work towards victory in November.

Debbie, I am glad to have so much respect from a middle aged newly wed. I will work to surround myself with people of such competence like you do: see Ralph Reed, Anthony Scott Hobbs, and his gang.

  17. debbie0040 says:

A lot of GOP activists do not have a favorable opinion of Sen. Shafer and neither do I. He is too moderate.

educated voters, let’s also get rid of what you call extremist voters and see how many elections the GOP would win with only moderates voting..

Do not make the mistake of thinking that because Reed lost the conservtatives will just roll over and play dead for you. We are willing to fight to maintain control of the party and also are willing to make sacrifices…..

Eric Johnson is doing a great job and should stay in place.

There are a lot of grassroots activists willing to call their State Senators and put pressure on them to keep Johnson in place.

The state senators do not answer to Shafer, they answer to the voters in their districts.

You guys are really putting the cart before the horse. Cagle has not won yet and from what I am hearing about the Cagle supporters in the state senate , I am no longer sure if I want him to..Especially all this talk about getting rid of Johnson…

The Face of the Lamont Left

The defeat of Joe Lieberman is a seminal event in American politics, even though the incumbent Democrat may well come back and win this fall as an independent.

The left wing of the Democratic Party is now energized as it hasn’t been in years, and Iraq will no doubt now move to the top of the party’s fall election agenda. The odds that Al Gore will challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination from the left in 2008 have clearly gone up. But the victory of Ned Lamont also exposes some of the weaknesses of the movement that propelled him to victory. Last night, Mr. Lamont accepted victory prominently flanked by Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Not exactly the image one would want to convey to swing voters.

There are already attempts by the Lamont Left to use his victory to mount a McGovern-style takeover of the party. Susan Estrich, the former campaign manager for Michael Dukakis in 1988, appeared on Fox News last night and openly warned Hillary Clinton that she had better adopt a strict anti-war stance or she can forget about being president.

Then there are the bloggers who were the shock troops for the Lamont campaign. Markos Moulitsas, the proprietor of Daily Kos.com, barely bothered to revel in the Triumph of the Bloggers before he began issuing ultimatums last night. He urged Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid “to strip Lieberman of all committee assignments” and hand them to “real Democrats.”

A sectarian wing that calls for retribution against one of the Democratic Party’s former vice presidential nominees and one who voted with his fellow Democrats 90% of the time is a new phenomenon in American politics. Whatever short-term successes the Lamont Left enjoys, I suspect that independent voters will wonder how many of its priorities have to do with them and how many with settling old scores inside the party.

    — John Fund

    Night of the Long Knives

As a rule, incumbent members of Congress almost never lose primaries. In the last decade, a total of only 15 have been defeated and nine of those came in the redistricting year of 2002.

That makes last night’s defeat of three incumbents remarkable. It would be hard to find three more different members of Congress than mild-mannered Joe Lieberman, fiery Cynthia McKinney and gruff GOP Rep. Joe Schwarz of Michigan. But all went down to defeat against challengers who were given little or no chance only months ago.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that just 55% of voters support their local members of Congress, the lowest such finding in that poll since 1994, when Republicans took control of Congress. Back then, it was a reaction against the campus-style liberalism of the Clinton administration that fueled voter anger. Now there is a general concern about the competence of Republican governance, supplemented with conservative disenchantment over excessive federal spending.

That conservative anger came bubbling to the surface last night as former state Rep. Tim Walberg upset freshman Congressman Joe Schwarz by 53% to 47% in a tumultuous GOP primary in rural Michigan. Mr. Schwarz, who served as John McCain’s 2000 chairman in Michigan, was attacked for supporting Congressional earmarks, the Beltway term of art for pork barrel projects, and for refusing to back restrictions on the government’s power of eminent domain. The National Taxpayers Union rated him in the bottom 4% of House Republicans for fiscal conservatism. Social conservative groups also pilloried him for his moderate views on gay marriage and abortion.

The clear institutional winner from last night’s results was the free-market group Club for Growth. It raised over $600,000 from Club members for the Walberg campaign and also spent over $500,000 on independent expenditure ads zinging Mr. Schwarz for his liberal record on economic issues.

In his concession speech, Mr. Schwarz boasted that he had been unwilling to change his beliefs, acknowledging that “pandering [to arch-conservatives] would have been easy.” But the thousands of voters who ousted him from office last night weren’t arch-conservatives. They were a coalition of parents who felt he was indifferent or hostile to their values and taxpayers who were tired of having one of the state’s premiere tax hikers represent them in Congress.

Mr. Schwarz’s mistake was that he thought he could represent outstate Michigan as if he were representing suburban Connecticut. Last night’s primary results are as much of a wakeup call for moderate Republicans in conservative districts as Joe Lieberman’s loss was for moderate Democrats who find themselves targeted by the Lamont Left.

  18. debbie0040 says:

Brian, I think you missed the point 4 of spades was making. They don’t want you on their team and neither do I want you on our team. Just go away..and stay away

  19. Brian from Ellijay says:

    Folks, There she goes again.

Debbie is still crying over the spilt milk that is Ralph Reed. While I have remained quiet and not gloated over Ralphs humiliating defeat. Debbie continues to attack everyone and anyone associated with our Republican Nominee Casey Cagle.

Debbie, you are a Vice-Chairman of the Cobb Republican Party. Shame on you for not supporting our nominee, State Senators, and Republican activists who work so hard every election.

Senator Shafer may have supported Karen Handel, but he has an A+ from NRA and the endorsement of Georgia Right To Life — things not normally handed out to moderates.

Folks, next Debbie will be attacking Chip Rogers as a ProAmnesty liberal.

  20. Brian from Ellijay says:

BTW, Debbie if that team is the Anthony Scott Hobbs committee for State Chairman…I would never want to be on your team or any team associated with that group. πŸ™‚

    Chime in Bill Simon?

  21. debbie0040 says:

I do support the nominees of the party. I think you had your nerve showing up at Karen’s party last night. Nobody wants you around..

I was simply defending Eric Johnson in his role as Pro Tem. He is the GOP leader in the Senate. Educated voter attacked the current leadership in the legislature. Shame on him too

Educated voter even insinuated he was moderate so blow it out your rear Brian . I would strongly advise you keep your distance in the future….You are nothing but a troublemaker…

  22. Brian from Ellijay says:

Debbie I am more encouraged than ever to attend COBB GOP events. Thanks. BTW, Angelan, Michael, Jamie and even Karen herself told me they were glad to see me. So, I guess I will be seeing you soon πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the encouragement for attendance.

  23. 4ofspades says:

    Brian,
While your republican loyalty is admirable, you need to understand, based on your actions, your conduct, and the fact that you have been detained by the police, you will never be be part of this Handel campaign or any future Handel campaigns.

The statements you made on the blog and other places weren’t in jest.

I’ve had a conversation with Paul, Nick, and Marty about you. Next time I see Casey, I’ll speak to him as well.

The fact the you just lied about Karen, Jamie, Michael and Angelyn (the correct spelling) saying they was glad to see just highlights the fact that you have no credibility.

Good luck in your future endevours.

  24. Brian from Ellijay says:

Steve, I have never said that I wanted to be apart of the Handel campaign, but that I would support our nominees.

As far as speaking with Michael, Angelyn, and Jaime is no lie. I made it a point to talk to each before I left. Micheal outside, Angelyn by the bar-she came up to me, and Jaime as I walked in over by the TV. How could you know that I lied? Your credibility has been lost for a long time on this blog. Thanks Steve. I wish your wife well in the upcoming election.

BTW where is this proof of an arrest? I have yet to see anything about it. Should I just report to the jail? Do you know the officier about to do it? I am confused knowing that I have never been to even to the sheriffs office more less the jail.

  25. Brian from Ellijay says:

I am glad that you spoke with Paul, Nick and Marty. My relationship with each of them far surpasses one primary election. We have worked together on many diffent projects even in college and then on campaigns. Each of them know me quite well, they know what I would and would not do in a campaign. I can assure you that I would be one of the first that they would call if something came up about me.

But since you have an urge to speak of me, Please do call Casey. Call David Shafer and Chip Rogers as well. My Senator Chip Pearson and my State Rep. David Ralston also should receive a call.

    Who am I leaving out?

I guess the campaigns that I have worked on. Call Robert Lamutt (02-04), Calder Clay, Sonny Perdue (02), Charlice & Mike Byrd(02 & 04) Derrick Good (04). All are people that I have worked for in the past. They should have an opinion of me.

  26. bowersville says:

    Brian,
You have had a lot of nasty things to say about Handel and her husband. If anyone has lost their credibility, it’s you. You violated protocal on this board for the world of PP to witness, you revealed IP addresses which Erick and Clayton had vowed to keep confidential. And ever since, you have hounded Karen’s husband and Karen. I’ve a sugesstion for you, get your senator and representitive to call Handel, Cagle, and others and vouch for you. Get Pearson and Ralston to tell Handel how loyal you are. I speak only for myself, I am in no way other than an activist/contributor involved in any campaign. Brian, quit trying to make up and stop being a lap dog, that behooves no one!

  27. Brian from Ellijay says:

Bowers, if you go back far enough you will find me saying not so good things about Sen. Stephens. It is was a primary. It is now over. We are one team now. Thats my point. I do not care to make up. But I do care that we win. Priority one is getting Republicans elected.

Sonny, Cagle, Handel, Black, Eaton, Brown, and I forgot one. LOL

  28. Brian from Ellijay says:

BTW, i never knew that it was against the rules to do that. I still do not guess I have ever seen the rules. Night man.

  29. debbie0040 says:

Brian, you were FIRED from the Lamutt campaign and have not been employed since then by another campaign to my knowledge.

Robert may say nice things about you, but he had to fire you from his campaign.
Quit making excuses for your behavior. You are nothing but a troublemaker.

  30. Brian from Ellijay says:

Debbie I was working on the campaign on the day of the runoff, up until the moment he lost. And then for another week after that. Funny, how you accuse things. Call Robert and ask him.

  31. debbie0040 says:

You might have been as a volunteer but not as paid staff. I remember being told by them that they had to let you go.

  32. Brian from Ellijay says:

Why would I volunteer for a campaign that I had been “fired from?” Think about that. Call Robert and ask him.

  33. debbie0040 says:

Cindy told me they had to let you go and why when it was done. Want me to go on? Everyone knew it. I am not the only on that knew. Are you saying you were hired back after your were let go?

  34. debbie0040 says:

Brian, why are you lying? You know you were fired.

I did check the disclosures files on the FEC site and guess what your name was not listed? I just checked the one filed before the primary. It includes April . I did not check prior records.

Wow. I’m dying to see if Calder’s statements would match what other folks from that campaign have told me.

  36. debbie0040 says:

Brian you were working for the Lamutt campaign way before even the primary. Are you denying that you were fired?

Cindy told me and several others and there were several others that knew you were fired including Fred and Pat, Lori, Anthony and others, etc. Do you really want me to go on? Face the truth Brian. Ben took over your job when you were fired.

By the way I saw the entry you posted on Wilkepedia about Ellijay. Really funny that you would do that.

“. Ellijay is also home to the famous “Pigs on the Hill” at Col. Pooles BBQ. Ellijay is also home to Republican Brian Laurens. ”

This entry is from Wikipedia, the leading user-contributed encyclopedia. It may not have been reviewed by professional editors (see full disclaimer)

I did check the forms and you were not listed. Big suprise. Quit your lies. Can you show proof that you were ever on the payroll of any campaign other than Lamutt’s. You are nothing but hot air and a liar.

You talked the police out of arresting you when you were caught with those campaign signs by saying you had found them at the dump and were going to return them.

You have burned your bridges with a lot of people, even in Hall County…

And Brian, posting Anthony’s cell phone number on the AJC Poltical Blog and telling everyone to call him was not cool. You should have learned your lesson about posting private info . You have not and don’t even bother denying it.

You lied on th e AJC blog and said it was not you and you had never posted on it before. That you found it doing a Google search on your name. I did a Google serach on your name and it did not come up with that thread on that blog. It did come up with you posting in your name on that blog before.

Quit your lies. Everyone is sick of you…

    Brian,
You were fired from the Lamutt campaign for the same reason the you are now on a three year suspension from the Georgia YR’s. and why you have been asked to resign your position on the Gilmer County Republican party and the 9th district republican party.

  39. Bill Simon says:

    (Ahem)….this has all been rather…errr….interesting. But…

The MOST fascinating statement on the entire thread was from Debbie when she stated: “David Shafer is too moderate.”

I damn near split a gut with that one, Debbie. As I’ve stated before, you really ARE CLUELESS. And, you should consider changing your screen name to “BatGirl” because you talk as blindly as a bat flies.

I certainly hope your new hubby’s house is in David Shafer’s district. Nothing would tickle me more than seeing you get aspirations in the future to run against him. Have ASH as your campaign manager, and Frank Molesky as your political director. LOL!….I just crack myself up.

  40. debbie0040 says:

No , his house is not in Shafer’s district. I do expect Shafer to have opposition in 2008, though.

  41. Chris says:

I think Shafer will have opposition too. At the moment the front runners are Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson.

    Sorry David, couldn’t resist. πŸ™‚

Wow this string is hilarious, very old too, ya’ll should consider saving $ by removing older threads. It’s sad to hear about Brian’s shortcomings, after all, he is young and naive, but you can’t deny that he’s got ambition and drive, albiet, marred by naivety.
