Sonny DIDN’T

The AJC Political Insider reports that Sir Ian McKellan, the openly gay actor of recent “Gandalf” fame, claimed to the New York Daily news that “Sonny Perdue had made the [him] an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Georgia National Guard.” According to McKellan:

“I was in Atlanta doing press for the ‘Da Vinci Code’ – and they wanted to honor me. The governor made me a lieutenant colonel in the gubernatorial force,

  1. Jeff Emanuel says:

Sadly, yes…he came out years ago. However, his performance in the screen versions of my favorite books of all time allows him a little slack, I suppose.

  2. Bill Simon says:

No doubt Sadie Fields will now issue an Alert informing her flock of this new discovery and urge them to ban the buying of any more Lord of The Rings’ books and movies.

  3. shep1975 says:

As an honory Lt. Col. myself, I would be proud to serve in the defense of my state against the possible invading hordes from Alabama with Gandolf!

What I wonder is what this new info does to the relationship between Zell and Bill Stephens who has been knocking Handel because of her pro-homosexual agenda? Zell endorsed Reed and Stephens, but Zell commissioned an openly gay British actor to be an honorary GA Lt. Col. AND Zell has endorsed Sonny too!

    Oh the humanity!

  4. CHelf says:

I think they let anyone become Lt. Colonels here. I’m one as well.

I’m wondering if Zell even saw the movie Ian was promoting. Not exactly your family values sort of guy. And not a good role model for a leader as well. Give it up for Zell to honor someone who does more harm to his own side and family than the outside forces. Patterns?

  5. shep1975 says:

I actually have two…one from Barnes and one from Perdue. If a VC of the GAGOP can get one from the Democratic Governor…anyone can get one.

Now, the “Admiral of the Georgia Navy” is one that only the Gov’s personal recommendation can get you. The only one I know who has one is Rep. Joe Wilkinson. I asked him what the GA navy was and he said, “A bass fishing boat and 6 pack of Bud Lite.”

  6. bowersville says:

As a twice a Lt. Colonel in the Georgia militia, to defend from the horde of invaders, was quite an honor. However, I never had the opportunity to meet the hordes. As far as Stephens , if true to his word, he needs to condemn Zell for such a travesty.

  7. bowersville says:

Yes, I attended UGA v. Auburn. But not in the manner you think. My dad was an Auburn graduate. The only time in my youth I had opportunity to watch games “between the hedges” was when it was Auburn v. Georgia, my dad wouldn’t even allow me to listen to Munson(joke). The rest of the time it was down to Alabama. I’m so old it was Shug and Bear on the sidelines. Those are memories.

  8. bowersville says:

Goeff’s not a bad person, he was one hell of a recruiter. His dad, Jim Buck, the director of athletics in Colquitt county, put in Olympic pools, and more importantly, the olympic diving program. Don’t knock Jim Buck or Ray, I’ve been around, I learned to swim in Jim Buck’s pool. I’m older than Ray, but my youngest brother is the same age, out of the 1st Baptist church of Moultrie. If you desire, I’ll explain how we got there and how we got here! Call Ray, ask him about Knuck McCrarry and Tom White.

  9. buzzbrockway says:

Hey guys….it’s Ray Goff or if you prefer “Goof.” Don’t y’all remember the plane flying over Sanford Stadium dragging a banner that read “Fire Ray Goof?” 🙂

The Gandalf story is pretty funny – sorry Sadie, I’m not going to get rid of my extended DVD’s of the LOTR trilogy.

  10. bowersville says:

I don’t prefer “goof,” ask Ray Willis of Moultrie. Buzz, where the H are you from? Tech? LOL.( this is a joke, and I’m having fun with it) even though i’m serious when it comes to the DOGS! That plane avoided any controversy, it land at PDK.

  11. debbie0040 says:

I received mine from Alabama’s Governor in 1987. Those are almost abundant as toliet paper

  12. debbie0040 says:

Bowersville, I remember Shug Jordan, too so I guess that means I am old. Heck I even remember when ex Alabama QB Joe Namath promised the Jets were going to beat the Colts in the 1967(?) Super Bowl…

When Georgia and Auburn play each other, I become a huge UGA fan.

  13. shep1975 says:

Don’t get me wrong, as a person, Ray is one heck of a guy. I went to the same church as him and his wife when I was in Athens. They would always have the college groups over to their house for socials and stuff after church.

It must be getting close to football season!

I’m also a Kentucky Colonel and I don’t even make great fried chicken.

  14. HSC Republican says:

Goff did a good job at UGA…his biggest problem he was following Dooley. Kinda like the problem HW Bush had when following Reagan.

  15. BulldawgGirl says:

I can’t wait for football season to begin. I am disappointed though that Adam’s has started to implement restrictions on tailgates and parking on gamedays. He is trying to mess with the great and long-standing traditions of the university.
Glory, glory to ole Georgia! Go Dawgs!

  16. BB says:

I remember the plane with the banner. Also remember Terrell Davis after becoming a star with the Broncos despite getting limited playing time with UGA telling the story of how he referred to Goff as Mr. Potato Head.

Football season can’t get here quick enough, Dawgs set to have a good season no matter who ends up behind center (come on Stafford).

  17. Demonbeck says:

Surely you could have chosen a better argument for ridiculing Bulldawggirl.

That’s like saying that Atlanta is better than Savannah because “at least in Atlanta you aren’t allowed to walk out of a bar with a to-go cup.”

  18. BulldawgGirl says:

That’s not what I mean. Just because I go to UGA doesn’t mean that I get trashed whenever the Dawgs play between the hedges. I just like things the way that they are…setting up your tailgate on Friday afternoon, grilling out, hanging with friends and family and then coming back out on Saturday morning for more time with family and friends. Then cheering on the Dawgs. To me gameday is not about getting trashed; it is more about spending time with people that you care about and everyone rallying behind our Dawgs. Besides, what fun is it if you are too drunk to make it to the game or remember the game?

  20. BulldawgGirl says:

My parents and I would prefer that I finish out my time at UGA without getting arrested. Sorry if following the law makes me prudish.

  21. HSC Republican says:

As fun as tailgates are at UGA, nothing beats tailgating in the founders lot at HSC! Anyone who will be in Farmville Va this fall stop by for a game and visit the College Republican Tailgate where we prove we are “The best party on campus!”!

  22. Demonbeck says:

That would have qualified for the funniest post of the year had I not just closed the nomination process.

I hope you realize that I was just joking and would never condone underage drinking. I for one think it is a travesty that young beautiful women feel pressured into drinking and losing all inhibitions and making terrible mistakes.

Who am I kidding? That’s how I ended up with a hot wife.

  23. debbie0040 says:

Bulldawggirl, my hubby tells me his most memorable experiences at UGA was getting tashed on game day. Men tend to look things differently than women do…Men don’t care if they are of legal age or not, women are smarter and do 🙂

Demonbeck, I do pull for the Bulldogs except when they play LSU or Alabama…

  24. jacewalden says:

    LSU! C’mon now!

Debbie, you disappoint me. I can see Alabama. Actually, no I can’t because I love UGA with all of my heart, mind, soul, and body. But LSU! Que horrible!

  25. BulldawgGirl says:

There will be some College Republicas tailgates this season in Athens, too. Stop by if you are up that way. I’ll let you know when they are going to be. I am sure that I will find out once I get back to school.

I have seen one too many girls falling over in the stadium, getting sick, yelling obscenities for me to not want to represent my university like that. Throwing up while yelling “Go Dawgs” inside Sanford? , No thanks!

debbie0040- One of my friends told me this…”you can’t spell SLUT with out the LSU”… 🙂

  26. debbie0040 says:

I am from Louisisana so I have to root for the Bayou Bengals except when they play Bama.

I have the same sentiments for Alabama. I call Tuscaloosa God’s country 🙂

To keep peace in the family I do cheer for UGA. Even got one of my doggies a UGA sweater.

Bulldawg girl, I heard the same joke but it went, You can’t spell slut without UT 🙂 You and I have to agree on that one. I despise Tennessee.

  27. jacewalden says:

For some reason, my little brother LOVES Tennessee. Every night I ask God for forgiveness for not beating him enough. Just Kidding, but not really. 😉

  28. debbie0040 says:

Jacewalden, it could be worse. I have two nephews and one is an Auburn fan and one is a Tennessee fan. What a nightmare !!!

  29. Loren says:

Perdue spokesman Dan McLagan has also clarified that the title given by Zell to McKellen was “Lieutenant Colonel, Aide de Camp, Gov.’s Staff.” The honorary appointment had nothing to do with the National Guard or the US military.

  30. MorganCoGOP says:

I can’t wait for the upcoming season. I think Georgia’s defense will keep us in games even if the offense struggles. GO DAWGS!!!

  31. Demonbeck says:

Seriously Loren, what are you thinking discussing the topic at hand?

    The nerve of some people.

  32. BulldawgGirl says:

You are just jealous that I go to the best school in the nation…you probably didn’t get accepted! 🙂

  33. BulldawgGirl says:

Thought you would like that Jeff!! You are one of the chosen ones. You are lucky enough to be a Dawg!!

  34. Dorabill says:

Once I got into a Dogs game with a fifth of “Old Crow” in my Members Only jacket. Bad idea. They tell me I really enjoyed the second half.

  35. bowersville says:

Look, I’m disapointed, everyone of you missed my point. I grew up a deprived child. The only time I was allowed to view “between the hedges” as a pre-teen was Georigia/Auburn. Do you not get it, my Dad forced me to be one of the invading hordes. I’m laughing as this is the truth, I love my Dad and I miss him dearly.

  36. debbie0040 says:

I made a bet with my hubby that Bama would win another national championship before Georgia would. 🙂

  37. BulldawgGirl says:

That’s ok. My parents vote Democrat and I would never dream of doing that. Just be glad that you have seen the light!! Go Dawgs!

Debbie- Well you were wrong about RR winning the election with a 10-15 point lead, so you are probably wrong about Bama and Georgia, too!
