Former state schools superintendent Linda Schrenko was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $400,000 in restitution for her part in a scheme to swindle taxpayers out of more than $600,000.

“I’ll probably be paying the rest of my life,” Schrenko said as she anticipated the penalty before entering court.

Wearing a black pantsuit with pink lapels, the 56-year-old Schrenko appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Clarence Cooper, who officially imposed the sentence that grew out of a plea bargain arrangement Schrenko struck with prosecutors in May.

Only a female reporter would care what Schrenko was wearing.

In fairness to that reporter, I think Schrenko’s appearance is relevant to the story, given that she used some of the money she stole for a facelift, among other things.

I would have liked it better if she had been wearing sackcloth, ashes and look of deep, sorrowful shame. That was money for special education for deaf children, for god’s sake.
