Houston Chronicle’s Mason writes that during Pres. Bush’s 3/8 trip to College Park, GA, for the state GOP’s annual Pres. Day Dinner, he mentioned ex-Christian Coalition Exec. Dir./GA LG candidate Ralph Reed (D), who “has close ties to” Jack Abramoff. Bush: “I want to thank people who are running for office. … Two candidates running for [LG] with us, Casey Cagle and Ralph Reed and I appreciate them both being here tonight.” Recently, the WH had been doing all it could “to distance” Bush “from anything related to Abramoff” (3/9).
Bush called “them both good men” in his remarks (Jones, Savannah Morning News, 3/10).
Bush spokesperson Dana Perino: “The president was invited by the Georgia state party, and this fundraiser is aimed at helping the entire ticket” (Loven, AP, 3/9).
The most interesting thing to note is that Bush was willing to mention Ralph Reed and Cheney, in Florida, was unwilling to mention Katherine Harris, who is also being assailed for issues similar to Ralph’s.
