Newt Gingrich Calls for Replacement of Tom Delay

From the Washington Post

And former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) called on House Republicans to elect a new majority leader to permanently replace Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), Abramoff’s most powerful ally in Washington, who faces a trial on unrelated criminal charges of violating Texas campaign laws.

“Unequivocally, the House Republicans need to select a new majority leader in late January or early February,” said Gingrich, who cited revelations in The Washington Post that a public advocacy group organized by DeLay associates had been largely financed by Russian energy interests.

  1. Chris says:

I think replacing DeLay, and anyone else named by Abramoff – whether guilty or not – would send a clear signal to the American people that the GOP does not tolerate nor is it the part of corruption.

Of course the people who would be replaced have so many outstanding favors that I doubt it would happen. Still, it is probably the best thing the GOP could do with this scandal. Admit they screwed up and get rid of the perpatrators.

  2. Bull Moose says:

I say replace the entire House Leadership team — they are all tainted by Jack Abramoff and the corruption scandal.
