President Underwood

Today, Mercer University has announced that Bill Underwood, Interim President of Baylor University, will be named President of Mercer University. Mercer’s current president, Dr. R. Kirby Godsey, is retiring. My wife is Dr. Godsey’s assistant.

Mr. Underwood is a law school professor and former lawyer. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who has left the practice of law and I’ll refrain from the lawyer jokes.

Spoke to the staffer of a Texas congressman. Seems your new president is a former trial lawyer and a member of a very liberal Baptist Church in Waco. From what I was told, looks like Mercer is heading the way of most universities that leave their religious roots for the perceived greener grass of secularism.

I am tickled pink to know the receptionists of the Georgia and Texas delegations are communicating. I can only imagine the high level information that gets exchanged in those conversations!

P.S. Maybe you can swap some of the free peanuts on your desk for some of those nifty “Don’t Mess with Texas Stickers” your fellow staff assistant has.

P.P.S. A “liberal” Baptist church in Waco? Right.

Peanuts and free Coca Cola (every type of Coca Cola at that)- the joys of working in a GA Congressional Office!

Not sure if it says anything other than a love for fellow trial attorneys, but he did give $250 to John Edwards campaign.

Sounds like he has a few months experience in a similar situation though as Interim President at Baylor.

Wonder how our guys will like someone who is an Edwards contributor when Mercer gets 20 million + a year from the state?
