Playing for the Senate

A good source tells Peach Pundit that Cathy Cox is not willing to rest in the House, but is actively engaging State Senators for endorsements. Says the source, “Mark is getting some competition. He had Powell and Harbison come out for him, but you’d think more would come out now that two-thirds of the House Dems have come out for Cathy. In fact, Cathy is pursuing Senators aggressively.”

Says a Democrat Senator, “A lot of us want to see how Robert [Brown] comes down. Right now he’s keeping his cards close. But, Cathy and Mark are both courting senators and Mark is not going to get all of us. It does seem that Cathy will get the more progressive Democrats and Mark will get the conservative Democrats. Of course, there are not as many of us as there use to be. There is general feeling even with many of us that Cathy would be stronger against Sonny than Mark. That is a calculation we will have to make.”

[UPDATE] I have promoted the first comment of this thread to the post above this one. The commenter disagrees with this. Again, I’m just passing on word. The commenter rightly points out that Brown has endorsed Taylor, but Brown has done little beyond the endorsement. I went back and checked with the two people who gave me this information and they do stand by it. Again, though, I’m just pimping gossip.

Spoke with a good friend who’s in the Cox camp (though not on the campaign) and this is basically what they said about the info in this post:

Not sure what the tipster above meant about Robert Brown: he’s already come out for Taylor, that was in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution weeks ago. Sounds like someone trying to set us up for a fall; Taylor is telling everyone that he has the entire Senate locked up and we can’t believe he’d do that unless there’s truth to the matter. There’s no reason Taylor shouldn’t have 99% of the Senate with him.

What we ARE hearing from the Senate is a general dislike of Taylor and his chances. Even many of those who will endorse him (and make no mistake, it will be most everyone) don’t like him, don’t respect him, and don’t think he can win. Also, many Senators are telling us that they still expect Taylor to accept the writing on the wall and run for reelection, and they don’t want to have to work with him for years to come after endorsing Cox.

But Senator Curt Thompson has endorsed Cathy. Thus he doesn’t have the ENTIRE Senate locked up nor does it give him 99%. (it would be 96%)

There are a lot of senators out there who owe a lot to Taylor. He funded their campaigns, helped them with fundraising, gave them prominent positions on bills, etc. Just like there will be House members who endorse Taylor, there will be Senate members who endorse Cox.

As for Sen. Brown, et al. This is a time in the race where the campaigns keep their cards close to their chest. We many not see Brown or anyone else out there drumming up support, but it is what happens behind the scenes that is important. Does anyone really know what Brown or anyone else is thinking, or are we gleaming from a few conversations from a few political people what the general consensus might be? I am just reminded that people in the know generally do not talk about this stuff, and that those who want to be in the know, spill the beans.
